The Subject: The Ottawa Senators

Hate: Call them whatever you want, but most NHL tough guys/enforcers/pests/goons are a dime-a-dozen. They're always available on the waiver wire or via free agency and are surprisingly adept at "bleeding for" for whatever team is signing their checks at the current moment. Whether or not that job is worth paying someone to do is another argument for another time.

So when a dangerous and reckless player like Chris Neil manages to last 12 years with the same organization, it means management thinks he's doing something right. As you can see from the gratuitously long and NSFW video below, what Chris Neil does is lead with his elbows, start fights and scrums for no reason and basically just attack whoever is in front of him like a hungry dog let off his leash.

Envy: The Senators play to sparse crowds in a middle-of-nowhere arena, while their shady, penny-pinching owner says and does strange things instead of paying their stars who invariably end up leaving sometimes for nothing in return.

And yet, no one ever wants to move them to Quebec or Seattle. Must be nice.

Phaneuf is eneuf!

NHL training camps have kicked off. In anticipation of the season, we have been warming up our emotional engines to conjure all the irrational excitement, hatred and other strongly worded feelings that accompany an eight-month devotion to watching men making billions playing a game.

This is part of a quick game of considering our rivals, with love (er, envy), and hate.

Hate: Dion Phaneuf is probably a super nice guy. He looks like the kind of guy who tells lame jokes that you can't help but laugh at, who lets his friends' kids ride his back like a horse and who is always giving people a lift home no matter how far out of his way they're going.

On the ice, we know Phaneuf is a dangerous wild animal, a kind of Stay Puft Marshmallow Man on skates who will stop at nothing until you and your entire city is stomped into dust. He has no remorse, no insight and no off button.

Phaneuf has a history of trying to damage Islanders going back to his Calgary days. He tagged Kyle Okposo in a preseason game in 2009. He tried to install John Tavares' head into the boards at the Air Canada Centre. Even poor Justin DiBenedetto got smacked upside the head a few years ago by the Maple Leafs captain.

He's one of the easiest players in the conference to hate and the thought of the Islanders playing against him fills me with a level of anger I don't have towards 99% of the rest of the league. I choose to assume he's a nice guy off the ice is because if he lives life like he plays hockey, he should be classified as a menace to society.

Envy: Whenever I check out Sportsnet's or TSN's websites I'm reminded that, in Canada, sports broadcasting means hockey broadcasting.

Turning on any of the big U.S. sports outlets - ESPN, Fox Sports 1, WFAN in New York, even the NHL's own broadcast partner NBC - means hearing about college sports, baseball, basketball, football (if you're lucky), NASCAR, golf, mixed martial arts and probably a ton of gossipy pablum you don't care about. Anything but hockey.

This makes me very envious of my Canadian friends who get to hear NHL discussion all the time. Unfortunately, most of the hockey-focused shows are based in Toronto, which means they waste the majority of their time talking about the Leafs, who have done absolutely nothing to warrant that amount of discourse.

If the Leafs played in any other city, they'd be just another mediocre team with a decades long championship drought. They would be the Detroit Lions in the Super Bowl era, the Chicago White Sox pre-2005 or the Cubs post-the Woodrow Wilson administration.

Instead, they are the singular sun around which the entire NHL solar system revolves, which means an unending assault of hot garbage like this and this and this. Anyone that follows interview transcriber @Hope_Smoke on Twitter no doubt marvels at the daily, sometimes hourly insanity that helps twist every Leafs move into any literally justification the team and their enablers need.

I wish hockey had a more prominent place in the New York/New Jersey sports landscape. But if Toronto is any indication, maybe we're better off the way we are.

The Subject: The Montreal Canadiens

Hate: As the Islanders play their final season at Nassau Coliseum, a less-remembered tradition could potentially come to an end.

Every year, thousands of Canadiens fans invade the Coliseum and cheer on their team against what is, ostensibly (and, sadly, officially) the home squad. The scores of the games and records don't matter because whenever the Habs do something positive, the applause is loud and forceful. Probably more so than it is in the Bell Centre, which is much larger and cavernous than the old Coliseum.

The phenomenon isn't exclusive to Long Island, as captured here by friend of the blog Laura at her blog, The Active Stick. That post is from 2010, when the Islanders marketing department tried to mobilize fans against the marauding Montreal hordes. I don't know if it worked that game, but I sure as hell know it hasn't worked since.

I hate that this happens, although it's worth nothing that Habs fans aren't the only ones to make the Coliseum a home away from home. I hate that years of shitty teams and long losing streaks and playoff free Springs has left tickets right there for the taking for anyone that wants them. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to watch a losing team. No team has given its fans more reasons to stay away than the Islanders.

It's a problem maybe half a dozen teams in the NHL even need to worry about. But I'm never more embarrassed than when a visiting team scores a goal at Nassau Coliseum and the roar is so loud you have to remind yourself where the game is happening.

When the Islanders set up shop at Barclays next season, I'm hoping this running gag comes to a end. If it takes exorbitant prices and the closest bus parking being in Bed Stuy, so be it.

Hate: No Steve Ott, No John Scott, No Patrick Kaleta (who is, as of now, still banished to Rochester). Who's left to hate? Hulking million-dollar man-child Tyler Myers? Chris Stewart, who might be the quietest two-time 100 PIM guy in the league? Seriously. With only six fights last season, Stewart must have racked up a ton of tripping or interference calls to get into triple digits.

Marcus Foligno always seems like he's in the middle of things when the Islanders and Sabres get together. We'll go with him, but polls are open for new candidates.

Envy: Ah, the early days of a franchise rebuild. When undermotivated veterans are jettisoned, draft picks are hoarded, every kid looks like a superstar and the future is wide open. Cherish this time, Sabres fans. Before you know it, years will pass and that sleeper pick from Moose Jaw you saw as the next Chris Drury is working at your local Starbucks and talking about that one time he fought Zenon Konopka in preseason.

Joking aside, the Sabres might be set up better than any full rebuild in recent memory. Their prospect pool was already pretty flush with intriguing talent like Zemgus Girgensons, Mikhail Grigorenko and Rasmus Ristolainen, plus they picked Sam Reinhart this year and have as "good" as shot as anyone of winning this year's Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

If we go with hate/envy previews again, we might soon hate and envy how quickly Buffalo turned things around.

Object: The Red Wings

Hate: I'm pretty sure Niklas Kronwall is Swedish for "Human Wrecking Ball." Kronwall is known for putting the entire force of his body into devastating checks that often skirt the line between legal and rules changlingly illegal. Chances are if you're a Red Wings fan, Kronwall is an effective and misunderstood throwback to a time when men were men and Ted Lindsey was still Terrible. If you're not a Wings fan, Kronwall is like the shark in Jaws and you're hoping no one on your team turns into Robert Shaw.

(The video is two years old, but not much has changed)

Envy: It's good to be the king or, in this case, the Little Caesar. Pizza King Mike Ilitch bought the Red Wings for about $65 in 1982 and is now one of the league's most august and influential owners. He's got so much pull that he not only guilt-tripped the NHL to moving his team, once the scourge of the Western Conference, to the East because of "travel and the fans," but he also got the debt-ridden city of Detroit to foot the bill for a new $450 million arena.

And remember, kids: when your team is winning, your staid, antiquated arena built in the 1970's is a mecca of sport. When the team is losing, that arena is a poisonous, uninhabitable garbage dump.

Hate: Let us recount the tale of Lightning defenseman and agent of evil Radko Gudas Iscariot:

Gospel of Lighthouse 35: 3-2 (SO)

Gudas Agrees to Betray Jesus John Tavares

Then Satan entered Gudas, now called Iscariot, one of the team's top four defensive disciples. And Gudas went to the chief players and the officers of the Tampa guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus John Tavares. They were delighted and agreed to give him money - 30 pieces of silver - and a limited no-trade clause. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Tavares over to them when no crowd was present. For Gudas Iscariot knew that, at an Islanders-Lighting game in December, there is never a crowd present.

Envy: The Lightning are good. Very good. A likely candidate to win the Eastern Conference good (provided goalie Ben Bishop is healthy and ready). I'm envious of any team that can stick it to the Penguins, Bruins or Rangers on the road and make them think it was more than luck.

Hate: Fellow members of the "Eternal Rebuild Club," the Panthers appear to still be in the chrysalis stage of their development and not yet ready to shed their cocoon. Until they form an actual identity, there are few players to hate. At this point, the hope is that their trove of prospects all turn into viable NHLers. Then we can hate them.

In the meantime, it is easy to hate their financial and political concerns that Islanders fans know all too well can derail and diminish a season before it has even begun. The Panthers' owners say the team can't keep bleeding money and they want to restructure their lease agreement on the BB&T Center with Broward County. A consultant hired by the county will run the numbers and decide what makes sense for the people (*cough*). Meanwhile, the club loses $100,00 a day and plays to sparse crowds while sexy new cities like Seattle, Quebec and Las Vegas get everyone playing Relocation Tetris.

Having gone through legal, real estate and other off-ice battles for many years with the Islanders (and, sometimes still going through them), I hate seeing anyone else have to. The fate of your team should be up to management and the players, not lawyers, politicians and whoever else comes out of the woodwork. I hate that Panthers fans have to deal with it, but they have my sympathies.

Envy: It's easy to wish the Islanders had Roberto Luongo because he's still a starting NHL goalie. But Luongo's just as good at Twitter as he is in the crease, maybe better. His gloriously bizarre, self-deprecating 140-character sense of humor is never disappointing and always hilarious. I can only dream about the comedy gold that would flow if he were let loose on Long Island and, eventually, Brooklyn.

Hockey players in general are a buttoned-up and pretty boring group. When they let their personalities out, the Islanders can be fun dudes. Of all of the players on Twitter, Michael Grabner is the only one who lets his hair down every once in a while.

No current NHL player brings the funny like @Strombone1. I don't know if Luongo was always like that or the fishbowl of Vancouver made his mind snap. However it happened, I'm glad it did.

Counterpoint: Luongo's contract is not enviable.

Hate: Milan Lucic is an ideal power forward, and also a tool. He is also the type of one-of-a-kind mythical unicorn that teams turn themselves inside out trying to replicate. Lucic Lust is what causes teams to draft every hulking, mouthbreathing goon from here to Medicine Hat hoping he'll blossom into a 30-goal top liner for a Cup winner. Much more often than not, this plan fails.

Other candidates include Zdeno Chara, the fearsome and fantastic former Islander, who you perhaps begrudge for the Pacioretty incident or his dramatic dive at the brutal hands of noted headhunter Frans Nielsen. Even more easy to hate is Brad Marchand, who Dom called a, "Grade A Weasel." I'm not going to argue that certification.

The judges will also accept Bruins cheerleader/apologist Joe Haggerty.

Love: One of the most fun things for sports fans to monitor is a good team that has had all of its well-paid chickens come home to roost. No one outside of Dallas Stars fans had heard of Reilly Smith when he came over in (what at the time was) the Tyler Seguin for Loui Ericsson trade.
