The first line left something to be desired. The second and third lines picked up the slack.

In Jack Capuano's post-game interview (posted on Islanders TV) after the season-opening 4-3 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils, the New York Islanders head coach told media who he liked, who he didn't (well, as much as he ever does that), and how he hopes the team is ready to step forward from last season.

Among the topics:

Michael Grabner's lethal speed, and how the play he made to create his final (unsuccessful) breakaway was truly impressive.

Why he thought the John Tavares line struggled. (Poor puck management.)

Which lines he liked (the second and third).

How the game was more wide-open than he expected, with defense jumping into the offense on both sides. (No traditional Devils yawner, this.)

Those old goalies.

A back-and-forth game saw multiple leads won and lost, and multiple isolated shootout breakaways turned away by two old goalies playing beyond 65 minutes.

The New York Islanders picked up two points on opening night for the first time since 2007, going goal for goal (and goal per period) with the New Jersey Devils through three periods and one overtime before a lengthy but scoreless shootout ended with Matt Moulson's conversion.

His was the only shootout try out of 12 attempts to beat the two goalies, who at age 38 and 41 have qualified for their official "Wily Veteran" cards. It gave the Isles the tiebreaker victory, officially 4-3, and absolved the team of sins and lapses during an otherwise entertaining open to the season where several newcomers made positive first (or second) impressions for both teams.

GS | ES | Corsi (fancy stats galore) | PBP | TOI | Faceoffs |

This game had a season opener's chaotic feel to it, with the Isles both dangerous and sloppy at alternating times, and the Devils also sloppy but looking like they played last night and were determined to rebound from their shutout loss in Pittsburgh.

First Period: 1-1

The Devils opened scoring when Dainius Zubrus found space in the slot to shoot hard enough that the puck bounced off the top of Evgeni Nabokov's glove, dropped off the crossbar and landed for Damien Brunner to beat Travis Hamonic to the puck and knock it into an empty net.

Michael Grabner tied things on a self-created breakaway up the middle -- with a serious hat tip to Hamonic, who found him in stride with a diagonal through the neutral zone -- on a play where the Devils appeared to forget just how fast Grabner is. Even when he received Hamonic's pass, Grabner had two defensemen to beat. But he split them simply through acceleration, and Martin Brodeur flopped to anticipate a deke, only to see Grabner slide it under Brodeur's torso.

Second Period: 1-1 Too (2-2)

The Devils took the lead again in the second period on a broken play that put a bouncing puck right on Michael Ryder's stick in the high slot with an open look through traffic. He wisely tried upstairs on Nabokov (who probably never saw it through four bodies) and was rewarded.

Grabner tied it again, again using his speed as Josh Bailey slapped a clear up the right wing boards. This time Grabner didn't have room to cut in front of the angling Devils defenseman, but that didn't matter: His angle was enough to beat Brodeur low with 6:17 left in the middle frame.

Third Period: Yes, This Was 1-1 As Well (3-3)

Grabner featured in the go-ahead goal as well, on a pretty give-and-go alliance of Underrated Small European Hockey Countries. His combo with Frans Nielsen began with a diagonal neutral zone pass from Matt Donovan, and was finished by Nielsen on a crafty backhand that took advantage of Brodeur's advancing age and apparent difficulty bending down as easily as he once did.

The Devils got it back however, converting six minutes later just after the expiration of a power play where they held play in the Isles zone for nearly the entirety. The Isles threatened to reclaim the lead quickly: Kyle Okposo hit the post on a two-on-one, and Grabner created yet another breakaway for himself by deceptively taking a Frans Nielsen pass off his skate to fool Marek Zidlicky. But this time Brodeur stopped the low shot.

The Islanders then had their best of two power plays on the night, forcing Brodeur into several scrambles but never finding the kill shot. Brock Nelson set up Pierre-Marc Bouchard for a great backhand tap on a rushed 2-on-1, but Martin Brodeur made a highlight pinwheel toe save that will ensure broadcasters insist "he's still got it" for at least another few months.

Overtime: 0-0 (3-3)

Nothing too remarkable here, though Hamonic dangerously coughed the puck up behind the net late in OT, a mistake that nearly led to a golden Devils chance if not for the Danish Intervention of Nielsen.

In the shootout, some notables: Evgeni Nabokov did well to stop a Brunner backhand deke, while Nielsen's own backhand was judged to be flubbed wide. Nabokov actually stretched the left pad on two attempts, including Patrik Elias' sneaky try. Josh Bailey hit the post, but Matt Moulson finally ended the the six-round shootout with its only conversion, a forehand just inside the stick-side post.

The Newcomers

Brunner and Ryder certainly made their mark for the Devils, each tallying and helping New Jersey forget Ilya Kovalchuk for this night. Hamonic's pass on Grabner's goal eluded Jaromir Jagr's reach.

For the Isles, Brock Nelson impressed with several little maneuvers on a line with fellow new lineup members Peter Regin and Pierre-Marc Bouchard. Nelson nearly had his first point when he intercepted Martin Brodeur in Rick DiPietro mode. But the puck got caught in Nelson's skates until he ended up behind the net, and Brodeur recovered.

Nelson also took a costly retaliatory hooking penalty on Steve Bernier shortly after the Isles took a 3-2 lead in the third period, which led to Brunner's goal that tied it at 3-3 seconds after the penalty ended.

Donovan was good and calm with the puck -- as billed, essentially. His role is clearly to look for the offensive opportunities from the back end, and he did so even beyond his assist.

Hybrid Icing: I didn't mind it, and it should make the game safer. Seems odd to make the call so late (the hashmarks) rather than the top of the circles, however. One year-ending (or worse) injury per year is too many.

The Takeaway

So it was a sloppy night but also an exciting one, a refreshing contrast to other recent early-season tilts with the Devils. Two things that stood out to this viewer:

The Islanders' third line poses real danger and competence with the puck, which is nice considering Michael Grabner is no longer on it.

Although there was enough messy play to go around, something that survived the end of last season was an organized, sharp breakout once the Isles regained possession in their zone. The Isles support one another on those breakouts and make calm passes under pressure. That was a key to their revival last season and will be necessary to sustain it in the new year.

And you, dear reader? What did you like, what did you hate, what did you see or swear you think you saw?

Up Next

Tomorrow is the home opener for the Isles, who welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Metropolitan Division. Columbus lost tonight at home to the Calgary Flames.

Hockey-hockey-hockey, hah-ah-ckey / Hockey-hockey-hockey, hah-ah-ah-ah-key... (Sing to tune of your choice...but no Wilson Philips please)

Cue the excitement, hockey is finally back -- and this time there was no war between suited billionaires and athletic millionaires to wait out before it all returned.

Instead, just an offseason of moves under a new CBA and a temporarily reduced salary cap. Not all of the New Islanders' moves will be in evidence for tonight's opener in Newark against the Devils, but several important ones are reflected in the expected lines below:

Moulson - Tavares - Okposo
Grabner - Nielsen - Bailey
Nelson - Regin - Bouchard
Martin - Cizikas - McDonald

MacDonald - Hamonic
Visnovsky - Hickey
Strait - Donovan

Starter: Nabokov
Backup: Poulin

Namely:

Bye Boyes, Bye Boyes, What You Gonna Do? Brad Boyes is gone, signed in the Career Resuscitation Camp known as the Florida Panthers. In his place, during camp the Isles tested Pierre-Marc Bouchard (free agent signing from Minnesota), Josh Bailey and Kyle Okposo. Look for Okposo to get the first crack tonight.

Grabner, Elevated: Okposo (or Bailey's) move means Michael Grabner slots back into the second line. Previously he made the third line dangerous while continuing his excellent PK work. For now he's back with PK running mate Frans Nielsen at even strength too.

It Is Your Destiny: With Mark Streit moving on to Philadelphia, John Tavares is the new captain. In accordance with the prophecies.

OHhhhhhhklahoma! In Streit's place, Matt Donovan brings the offense from the blueline. You'll hear coach Jack Capuano speak a lot about how he likes the Oklahoma native's willingness to "activate" -- which basically means pinching in or joining the rush as the fourth attacker. He's the first Oklahoman in the NHL, they say.

The Reverend Brock: Fellow rookie Brock Nelson also gets his shot, having won a de facto training camp battle with Ryan Strome, Anders Lee and Johan Sundstrom to claim a spot at forward opened up by Cal Clutterbuck's injury.

Regin-omics: Another low-hanging free agent fruit for Garth Snow is former Senator and Frans Nielsen buddy Peter Regin. The Dane has seen injury troubles sabotage his last two seasons, bumping him from the Senators' plans as their fountain of prospects has yielded results while his shoulder kept him on the shelf. If his shoulder is healthy and his fitness is back, he'll be useful. If not, the Isles have replacements ready and waiting in Bridgeport.

Scratched tonight are rough boys Eric Boulton, Matt Carkner and rookie Griffin Reinhart, the 2012 4th-overall pick who impressed in camp enough to stick around. He'll have to impress further, or win a job through injury, to stay past 9 games played.

On the Devils' side, no announced lineup changes yet, but Jaromir Jagr did play last night and was deemed "excellent" by his coach.
They Said It

"John reminds me of Denis Potvin," Fischler said, referring to the Hall of Fame defenseman who was the No. 1 overall pick by the Islanders in 1973 and later helped them win four straight Stanley Cups. "There’s a parallel to the way both were top overall picks plus the growing pressure and attention as the team improved. John’s growing maturity is roughly equivalent to the way the team is maturing. He’s as dedicated a young player as I have ever seen."

A prodigal fan returning to the fold now that they're relevant again?

We got you covered. Here's a brief albeit sleep-deprived* overview of their offseason moves and how this team is different from the 2013 edition that returned the franchise to the playoffs for the first time in six years but was eliminated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.

Oh yeah, not mentioned in the video: The Islanders named franchise superstar John Tavares their new captain. But if you aren't familiar with Tavares, then you have to do more homework than a five-minute crash course can provide.

The Islanders finally open their season against a team that opened their own last night.

Finally, we're here. The New York Islanders open their season tonight in Newark against a New Jersey Devils team smarting from last night.

The Islanders have a few new names -- including two prospects earning promotion -- and we've previously looked at some of their key questions here. What of these Devils?

Islanders (0-0-0) @ Devils (0-1-0)
7 p.m. EDT | MSG+ | Audio: NHL - WRHU
[Ilya Doesn't Live Here Anymore] Center
This Too Will Pass: In Lou We Trust

Who are they?

The third "metro" team, now staying home with their metro rivals in a resurrected and expanded Patrick Division that's dubbed New Coke, I mean "Metropolitan Division."

They are a team for whom the percentages -- shooting and save -- were unkind last season. Their hope is that those level back out toward something resembling normal. With a new goalie the latter is likely. Without the league's best shooter the former is more of a question.

Why are they?

Before there was a purple baseball team, there was a hockey team called the Colorado Rockies. After failing as the Kansas City Scouts -- hey, there's more K.C. in the Devils than in the Isles after all! -- and then failing as Don Cherry's Rockies, the franchise moved to the Meadowlands, where they languished before winning a Stanley Cup in the lockout (Part 1) shortened 1995 season played under the specter of a move to Nashville.

But that was a long time ago, and I'm the only one who ever brings it up. Hockey history is fun.

What are they?

They are a team that lost their best offensive player in Ilya Kovalchuk to cap <strike>de-circumvention</strike> retirement but gained a good goalie in Corey Schneider this summer. Naturally they scored zero goals against Marc-Andre Fleury last night while Schneider gave up three. Because small samples are fun. (Hey look, Fleury made a highlight reel save last night, the Proven Winner must be back, CTRL-V, etc.)

The Devils are unlikely to be shut out again tonight, at home, for their home opener, against Evgeni Nabokov, who has five shutouts in 83 games as an Islanders goalie.

But Martin Brodeur, who didn't start the season opener for the first time in ages last night, will be in goal for the home opener. Brodeur and Nabokov are a combined 79 years old, which means the Kubrick films of their childhood didn't even foresee iPhones.

In Lou We Trust described the Devils as sloppy and a victim of the Penguins' transition game in last night's 3-0 loss in Pittsburgh. Before the season, ILWT described the three key Devils questions (and added breakdowns of each position) as questions about the offense, about how they will split crease duties, and how Lou will keep their site name from becoming a cute relic, like a U.S. Postal Service slogan.

FIG Picks

We'll have more as the day and opening weekend goes on -- don't forget, the Isles home opener is Saturday versus the Metro newbies, the Columbus Blue Jackets.

For now, have some fun and pick the first Islanders goal (FIG) here, won't you?

Otherwise, chime along here or read other stuff.

The 2013-14 Islanders hit the ice for the first time tonight against the New Jersey Devils.

It's been a long off-season, full of questions and hopes. In a few short hours, we'll start to answer those questions and, with a little luck, inch closer to realizing those hopes.

But enough of my yakkin'. Here are some links to tide you over until then.

While You Were Sleeping:

That hilarious and way-over-the-top meltdown on the bench is going to cost Patrick Roy $10,000, courtesy of the NHL. When reached for comment, Anaheim coach and target of Roy's wrath Bruce Boudreau said, "Ten Grand?! You know how much Haagen Daas that'll buy?" [SB Nation NHL]

The Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL signed a goalie to a tryout contract last night. Some guy named Ilya Bryzgalov. [SBN]

Jason Pominville signed a five-year extension with Minnesota. [SB Nation NHL]

Meanwhile, Pominville's old team, the Buffalo Sabres, will be without Ville Leino indefinitely thanks to a cracked rib. Must have injured himself carrying that huge monkey on his back. [Die By The Blade]

Also, Sabres president Ted Black offered up a vehement defense of the team's already despised third jersey for this season: "If you don't want it, don't buy it" and "If it's a turd sandwich, I'll have to eat it." Are turd sandwiches popular in Buffalo? [Puck Daddy]

I'm not the only one who can have some fun with the endless, irritating, futile NHL fighting debates.
