Islanders News: Schneider on waivers, Sorokin shutouts only good for ‘Third Star’

The Islanders are back home, for some rest and some good practices, no doubt.

The New York Islanders have returned home and don’t play again till Saturday in Nashville, part of a stretch of one game in 10 days. Bossy only knows where they’ll be in the standings by that point, as other Metro teams continue to play and pile up points. (Except for the Smurfs, who lost last night at home. Teehee.)

  • Cory Schneider is on waivers, a move that will make room for Semyon Varlamov’s return. (But who needs a second goalie anyway? We’re in Ilya’s World.) [TSN]
  • But Ilya Sorokin’s back-to-back shutouts were only good for NHL Third Star of the Week. Tough crowd. Tough, offense-loving crowd. [NHL]
  • Noel caught us up on the weekend in Bridgeport, where Salo, Golyshev and Skarek shined. [LHH]
  • Staple with six thoughts on the Isles after six games. [Athletic]
  • After a busy start, it’s one game in 10 days and a chance to rest for the Isles. The murderous collection of back-to-backs will resume soon. [Newsday]
  • Take pride in your affiliates: “The Worcester Railers kicked off its season by watching competitive eater Joey Chestnut devour a dozen 4-inch blueberry pies in 90 seconds.” [THN]

Elsewhere

Monday’s scores included a lot of continuing themes from the season’s opening weeks: The Panthers, Hurricanes and Blues remained undefeated, the Sabres won again (over the slumping Lightning), the Coyotes remained winless, and the Leafs remained a mess. Also, the Rangers were spanked at home, which is always scrumptious.

  • Vladimir Tarasenko appears to be healthy. [TSN]
  • The Penguins are a “whole lot closer” to getting Sidney Crosby back. [NHL] But Kris Letang is the latest to be taken out by a positive COVID test. [Sportsnet]
  • Elvis Merzlikins says a Stars fan taunted him before the game about the death of Matiss Kivlenieks, so the Blue Jackets’ win over Dallas was “karma.” [Sportsnet | Athletic]
  • The Kraken chose Nivana’s “In Bloom” as their goal song, a brilliant choice, but with a slight lyrical change. (Bonus content: Coulda been Kenny G.) [Davey Jones Locker Room]
