I know hockey just ended. But October without hockey is like a sky without stars. It’s not right, folks!

Islanders News

  • WATCH: Captain Anders Lee spoke to the media yesterday to wrap up the season. [Islanders]
  • Lee doesn’t share the concerns of some around the league as far as putting on next season goes. As the Islanders’ player representative to the NHLPA, he is probably on the inside of things like this, so I trust him. Also reflected on the Devon Toews trade and the 2020 run. [Newsday]
  • Yesterday was October 19; it was the fifteenth anniversary of the Isles’ first shootout win in franchise history. Miroslav Satan scored the winner and Rick DiPietro stopped all three Rangers shooters. [Islanders]
  • The Isles are ranked 29 out of 31 teams in Corey Pronman’s organizational rankings. They better win soon because there doesn’t seem to be much help coming down the pipeline. [The Athletic]
  • DGB identifies rule changes and hockey cultural touchstones that are the “fault” of every Eastern Conference team. The Islanders are, of course, responsible for playoff beards. [The Athletic]

  • Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick announced his retirement from broadcasting yesterday. Going back to his days with the Devils, I always liked him, even if he did sometimes overdo it with the verbs. He called an exciting hockey game in his prime and called some big Isles games (see the Islanders link). Happy retirement, Doc. [NHL | Newsday | NY Post | Islanders]

  • The Jets displayed its new players’ new numbers. Nate Thompson will wear no. 11 to honor Rick Rypien. [Jets]
  • Five NHL teams that could benefit from free agency gambles. Just filling the page, folks. [Sportsnet]
  • There’s apparently been a rumor that the NHL has a “fourth jersey” program ready to go for next season and an eBay listing of Penguins and Flyers jerseys lends some credence to that rumor. [Icethetics]
  • Why did EA Sports revive NHL ‘94? I don’t know, but it’s making a lot of people happy. Give them what they want! [ESPN]
