NHL: Preseason-New York Islanders at New York Rangers
A couple of blasts from the young buck helped propel the Isles.

Only one more preseason game after last night’s victory, and it’s tomorrow night in Oshawa, Ontario against Robin Lehner’s old team, the Buffalo Sabres. Though, it would seem unlikely he’d play, since he played all 60+ minutes in this game. No matter. ‘Tis just the preseason, after all.

  • Dom sums all the important and entertaining bits and pieces from the Isles’ OT win at the Garden, beating the Rangers once again. Ryan Pulock nearly had a hat trick, Anthony Beauvillier had the game-winner, Tanner Fritz is making an impression, and Nick Leddy was forced to switch sides as he was saddled with another anchor for most of the game, before that experiment seemingly expired.   • He’s not quite ready yet in the eyes of coach Barry Trotz, but expect to see Mathew Barzal killing penalties at some point this season. He has done this before, putting skill players on the PK for shorthanded opportunities. Like with Evgeny Kuznetsov when he was with the Capitals. [Newsday]

  • Couple of pretty big injuries were announced yesterday. First, top Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones will miss four to six weeks rehabbing a 2nd degree MCL sprain suffered against Buffalo two nights ago in the Kraft Hockeyville USA game in Clinton, NY.   • And the Ducks announced that Corey Perry underwent surgery to repair his MCL, as well as a torn meniscus. Tough time for knees. He will miss five months of action, a significant portion of the season, and it may be difficult for Anaheim to overcome this loss. [Anaheim Calling | NHL]
  • NHL.com conducted its annual fantasy hockey draft, as twelve teams selected sixteen times each. Barzal was the first Islander selected, all the way at no. 50. [NHL]
  • Flyers center Jori Lehtera may be implicated in a Finnish cocaine ring. That was a sentence I never saw coming. [BSH]
  • Aside from potential legal issues, Philadelphia may also have some trouble on-ice - namely, between the pipes. [BSH]
  • In NCAA Women’s Hockey, a new conference is born: the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance. It was formed by necessity after the New England Hockey Conference opted to play exclusively D-III hockey.
