Last night at the now ingloriously sponsored NYCB Live: Home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, bass player and lyricist Pete Wentz took to the stage to dance, dance in an Islanders jersey with the name and number of a certain former captain crossed out on the back and name “Billy Joel” written in its place.
Spotted via my friends Instagram Story: Pete Wentz wearing an Isles Tavares jersey with a few modifications at Fall Out Boy’s concert at the Coli last night. Yup. 91 is crossed out and Billy Joel replaces pajama boy’s name. #isles pic.twitter.com/ONykUH0KUw— Ivana Spade (@ivanaspade) August 30, 2018
Invoking the name of Billy Joel in the Piano Man’s homeland could have been a case of reinventing the wheel to run yourself over. But Fall Out Boy has recorded more than their share of covers and certainly ain’t afraid of no ghosts.
His leaving the Islanders is still hard to digest for those of us left behind, who may feel that Tavares is now the captain of the Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes. In fairness to him, it’s hard to say “I do” when I don’t.
