Although the New York Islanders enjoyed a superb haul of prospects at last weekend’s draft, their addition to this week’s annual prospect mini camp will likely not receive the typical fanfare.
This week, everything will be overshadowed by The John Tavares Decision. As the Islanders’ free agent captain entertains “discussions” (because they can’t mention term or money, wink wink) from at least five other teams this week, dozens of future Islanders and Islanders hopefuls will be getting to know the new regime at their practice facility, Northwell Health Ice Center.
So yeah, we get it: Who can think of the future when that very future is at risk of being submarined by other teams trying to woo the franchise center away?
Nonetheless, time marches onward.
They’ll divide up into Blue and White groups for practices Tuesday and Wednesday morning, with a morning skate on Thursday followed by a scrimmage that is open to the public at 6 p.m. Thursday night.
There will be another morning of practices on Friday and a closed scrimmage on Saturday. Usually there is a bonding outing or two thrown in too.
More details and camp rosters to come. In the meantime, enjoy your Tavares anxiety.
