The New York Islanders’ Day 1 haul at the 2018 NHL Draft was near-unanimously praised: they had two back-to-back picks at 11 and 12 and a handful of surprise picks by other teams before them meant Oliver Wahlstrom and Noah Dobson were waiting for them.
They took the American sniper and the Canadian defenseman and didn’t look back.
Day 2 of the draft moves much more quickly than Day 1. No long introductions and podium parades. Once things kick off in Dallas at 11 a.m. EDT, we’ll know what the Isles have by early afternoon.
But as with the first round, the Isles’ picks close together in the second round (also via the Travis Hamonic trade) provide them flexibility to collect more picks if another team wants someone in that range.
Here’s what’s on the board:
- 2nd round: 41, 43
- 3rd round: 72
- 4th round: 103
- 5th round: 134
- 6th round: 196
The other storyline, of course, is John Tavares. Will he follow through on his long march to free agency by at least listening to other teams next week? Or will he announce a decision this weekend to nail down final details with the Isles?
Either way, it’s another big day for the Isles. Chat it up here.
