With the NHL Awards Show this past evening, the Draft upcoming, and rumors swirling, no time to dawdle today, folks. Lots of news to ingest.

Islanders News

  • Arthur Staple’s contacts around the league already believe that Barry Trotz has agreed to join the Islanders, but when dealing with Lou, nothing is official until it’s official. [The Athletic]
  • Staple joined the More Sports Now podcast to talk all things Isles. He also personally believes that Trotz will be the next coach of the Islanders. [SoundCloud]
  • Home openers were announced yesterday, and we learned that the Islanders will start the season on Thursday, October 4 at the Hurricanes. Their own home opener will be Saturday the 6th, hosting the Predators at Barclays Center. [Newsday]
  • Mathew Barzal is confident the Isles will do a ‘great job’ as far as hiring a coach and getting John Tavares to stick around. [NHL]
  • He also got a haircut proactively once Lou was hired. Apparently, it was the bearded Nick Leddy and Andrew Ladd that texted him to do it. [Montreal Gazette]

NHL Awards Show

  • Speaking of Barzal, he unsurprisingly secured the Calder Trophy last night as the NHL’s top rookie in a near-unanimous vote. [Newsday]
  • The DevilsTaylor Hall took home the Hart Trophy, and Brian Boyle won the Masterton. [AATJ]
  • Victor Hedman won the Norris Trophy. [Raw Charge]
  • The Vezina Trophy went to Pekka Rinne this year, the Predators’ first major award winner. [On the Forecheck]
  • And of course, Gerard Gallant won the Jack Adams as coach of the year for his work with the expansion Golden Knights. [Knights on Ice]
