New York Islanders v Boston Bruins

The Islanders thought they’d won it in overtime on a Mathew Barzal backhander last night, but the refs declared goalie interference on Anthony Beauvillier, who tripped over a prone defenseman who’d dove to the ice specifically to disrupt Beauvillier.

I don’t know how the benefit doesn’t go to the offense in that situation, but so it goes. Goal was waived off, and they lost a boring shootout instead.

Islanders Reading

  • About last night: [LHH | Newsday | Isles | NHL | SCOC | Eric Hornick’s NYI Skinny (also, follow his twitter feed @ehornick this week for links to his old “It happened at the Coliseum” series)]
  • NEW! A hit from Thomas Hickey knocked David Krejci’s false teeth out and Johnny Boychuk kindly returned them to an ungrateful Bruins bench. Dude... [Deadspin]
  • NEW! We’re all still waiting for a Devon Toews sighting, but it seems that time might be soon-ish...? [The Athletic]
  • On their latest Islanders Anxiety podcast, Dan and Mike are preeeetty inspired by Barry Trotz. [LHH]

  • With the Islanders returning there for real on Saturday, let’s walk down some memories from Nassau [then-still gloriously unsponsored] Veterans Memorial Coliseum. [Isles Video]
  • Safe to say the players are pumped about returning to the barn, now with a silver paint job. [Newsday]
  • And safe to say the alumni are, too. [NHL]
  • Great piece on the Isles and MSG breaking new ground with three women in the booth (albeit not at the same time). Need moves like this. [ESPN]
  • Cheers to The Striking Valtteri Filppula on reaching his 900th (NHL regular season) game last night. [Isles preview]
  • This was reported out of Pittsburgh a while back but now officially announced: The Isles have hired Travis Williams away from the Penguins to make the new arena in Belmont a paradise. [Newsday | Isles]
  • The ECHL Railers gather to read to fourth graders. [Telegram]

Elsewhere

Last night’s NHL scores include an end, at last, to the Sabres’ 10-game win streak, and the Smurfs being shutout in Ottawa (including Kevin Shattenkirk being benched for the third period).

  • The Hurricanes aren’t messing around. They put both disappointing goalie Scott Darling and Valentin Zykov on waivers. [Canes Country]
  • By some estimates and really, really, really extended metaphors, the Oilers rebuild is 13 years old and taking on Punic War proportions, with them as Rome unable to oust Hannibal. [Athletic] Warning: really, really long
  • It was reported that Mats Zuccarello was awaiting a trade, so he clarified that that is, like, not at all what he meant. But he doesn’t know his future. [Post]
  • You can’t go more than three minutes without a new tweet or story rehashing what Mike Babcock says to reassure himself that he’ll have William Nylander, but Elliotte Friedman for one thinks even if/when signed, Nylander will eventually have to be dealt. [Sportsnet]
  • Here’s a trailer for the upcoming Bob Probert documentary, which they call “amazing.” [Freep]
