The New York Islanders take back to the road for a game for the beginning of a pivotal four game set against Metropolitan division opponents. They'll take on the Philadelphia Flyers tonight on the road before heading back home to Barclays tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Penguins and then again on Sunday against the New Jersey Devils. They'll then be off for nearly a week before wrapping the Metropolitan gauntlet in Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.

The Flyers come in to tonight's contest ranked one worse than the Islanders in both special teams categories. They're one spot worse than them in P.D.O. as well. They're one spot better in penalty differential and two spots ahead in shot attempt ratio. In nearly every aspect, they're quite close to the Islanders.

The two teams are on the opposite ends of the P.D.O. spectrum however. While the Islanders are ranked where they are thanks to an offense that has been doing quite well this season, the Flyers are up there thanks to their stellar goaltending. It looks like the Islanders will avoid Brian Elliott tonight, but Michael Neuvirth hasn't been a slouch in his own right. EDIT: Elliott is in.

Fans were hoping that Johnny Boychuk would make his triumphant return to the lineup tonight. He's still not able to go and it will be Dennis Seidenberg that returns instead. Sebastian Aho will be the healthy scratch and presumably returned to Bridgeport once Boychuk is healthy. The forwards will stay the same with Alan Quine getting the healthy scratch.

The Islanders find themselves outside of a playoff spot for the first time this season, but their standings alter pretty heavily heading into the half way point. With a victory tonight and a loss by the Hurricanes or an overtime or shootout loss and a loss by the Carolina Hurricanes in regulation, the Islanders will move back into the final playoff spot heading into the second half of the season. If they lose they'll still be out of the playoff spot, but a win by the Penguins against the Hurricanes in that scenario would drop them into seventh in the Metropolitan. Games are becoming more and more pivotal and the Islanders could probably use a certain winger that's down in Bridgeport.

Tonight's game will air on MSG+. Puck drop is at 7:05 P.M. E.S.T.
