The Stanley Cup final opened last night and...fittingly, it began with a lengthy and frame-by-frame close offside review that overturned the Predators’ would-be first goal.
The Penguins then went on to take a 3-0 lead, then went thirty-seven minutes between shots on goal as the Predators erased that lead, and get the winner late in the third after Nashville had finally tied the game. The Pens finished with 11 shots on goal, and a win. [NHL | Sportsnet | On the Forecheck | PensBurgh]
Islanders Reads
- Worth running through Google Translate (or your favorite Swede interpreter): “A moment that changed my life,” as the dynasty-era Islanders featured the first Swedes to get their name on the Cup, Anders Kallur and Stefan Persson. [Hockey Sverige]
- If you missed it, we’ve got a great FanPost by OneThirtyEight about how one Stan Fischler book created an Islanders fan in Michigan. Remember, you can win a $500 gift card to Fanatics by writing up your “Why I’m a Fan Of The Islanders...” story in a Fanpost.
And Also...
- Gary Bettman’s annual “state of the league” address included a firmly re-iterated “no” on the 2018 Olympics, and a conference-balance-dependent “we have to wait and revisit” on Quebec’s expansion bid. [Sportsnet]
- Also confirmed with that annual league hoopla: Tampa Bay will host the All-Star Game, and the Capitals will host the Leafs outdoors at the Naval Academy. [Raw Charge, Wash. Post]
- Before Game 1 had even begun, NBC let a Lavi-F-bomb air. Oops. [SB Nation]
- Also happening this week: The NHL Combine in Buffalo. Many measurements of slightly-less-awkward teenage draft hopefuls. [NHL]
- In praise of Predators GM David Poile, who has made some big moves to get Nashville into this position. [TSN]
- Recapping a great time at the Memorial Cup. [PPP]
