Islanders Gameday News: Here they come, round the final turn

The Islanders and horse puns that await us in the future excite me.

Good morning, friends. Today is a lovely day, despite the fact that I am operating on four hours of sleep. The Islanders are in action, hosting Anaheim tonight (leave FIGs here). They also have a home for the future.

Isles Win Belmont Bid

  • Governor Cuomo officially announced that their bid was successful and that they’re heading “back where they belong.” [LHH | Newsday | Governor’s Announcement | NHL | Islanders | NY Post]

  • The Islanders won the race back home. [MSG]
  • According to an opinion column penned by Randi Marshall, one of the reporters who’s been with the story since the beginning, this has been in the works since Charles Wang was around. [Newsday]
  • Speaking of Wang, his name came up quite a bit during the press conference, and Gary Bettman points out that were it not for him, they might not still be in New York. [Newsday]
  • Gov. Cuomo hopes that Bettman will reconsider allowing the Islanders to play at the Coliseum in 2019-2020 - they are contractually obligated to play at Barclays through next season and the new arena probably won’t be done in time for that season. [LHH | Newsday]
  • The arena will be privately financed, as well such large projects spearheaded by billionaires should be. [New York Times]
  • Isles owner Jon Ledecky also wants develop a “world-class facility” in Bridgeport. [CT Post]

  • Interesting: the NY Cosmos bid on Belmont and didn’t hear back for four years before the state scrapped their RFP; their bid was similar to the Islanders’ bid. [Elite Sports NY]
  • Elliotte Friedman gives us the write-up treatment in his latest 31 Thoughts, calling it a “massive victory.”
  • Arthur Staple says the news may be a good sign for John Tavares in terms of sticking around. [Newsday]
