Training camp proper starts Friday. The World Cup's most anticipated clash -- USA vs. Canada -- is tonight. Things are looking good for hockey fans.
Islanders Reads
- Arthur Staple was on Jason Gregor's Show -- hosted by a guy who missed last spring's playoff win, evidently -- to talk Islanders, including Ryan Strome, Mikhail Grabovski and probably that John Tavares never-Leaf guy. [TSN 1260]
- At the World Cup, Jaroslav Halak and his Island of Misfit Euros won again, defeating the country that represents two-thirds of the former country he called home. That means USA can be eliminated by Canada tonight. [LHH]
- Nikolay Kulemin had an assist in Russia's crazy 4-3 win over North America. [World Cup]
- North America had 46 shots in their comeback attempt. [Yahoo]
- Before this made-up tournament, people relentlessly ripped the two made-up teams, but I'm thrilled Europe is involved (and winning), and I frankly find Team North America far more appealing than either of the two squads those kids were too young to make. What a bonding story they'll have if they medal. (No link here, just editorializing.)
- Training camp with the regulars starts Friday. But meanwhile, hears Joshua Ho-Sang danglin' around the net. [Twitter]
- And here's Brent Thompson talking about the rookie camp so far. He praises Kyle Burroughs and Jesse Graham, among others, while searching for the eternal nirvana of "compete level." [Twitter]
- You're not the only one waiting to find out where Mathew Barzal plays this year. The entire WHL season preview depends on it. [Sportsnet]
- And now, on a very special IPB podcast, Howie Rose bids farewell. [SNY]
Not Exactly Islanders
- In some big news, hot but oft-overlooked young RFA Valeri Nichushkin has reportedly signed with CSKA Moscow of the KHL. Word is he likes Dallas but doesn't like Lindy Ruff. [Defending Big D]
- Brad Treliving kind of has a salary cap problem. [Flames Nation]
- The 2017 All-Star Game logo was revealed. You can sit down now. [NHL]
