American swimmer Katie Ledecky won the gold medal in the Women’s 200-meter freestyle at the Rio Olympics tonight, her second gold of the games.
In attendance was Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky, Katie’s uncle. Needless to say, he was a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitle excited in watching his niece win her second event in two tries. Next to Jon is Katie’s mom, Mary.
(gif via Russian Machine Never Breaks, who quaintly describes Jon as a “former Caps owner” with no mention of the Islanders. It’s okay, guys. We’re not mad.)
Katie Ledecky beat Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to take the 200-meter in one minute, 53.73 seconds Tuesday. On Sunday, Ledecky won gold in the 400-meter freestyle, breaking her own world record and finishing with so much time left, she could have tested the pool’s chlorine levels before anyone else crossed the finish line. One more gold in the 800-meter and she’ll become only the second woman ever to win the three longest freestyle events in the same Olympics.
Let’s hope some of Katie’s drive to win (and Jon’s bonkers reactions) get seen around the Islanders this season.
