The Islanders have a back-to-back matinee weekend starting today in Detroit. (True story: I had no idea why Sunday's was an afternoon game. All my usual Concussion Bowl Party hosts have skipped town.)

Leave your FIG picks over here before 2 p.m.

Islanders Reads
  • Adding another layer of anticipation to yesterday's news, Jack Capuano was "pretty sure" Johnny Boychuk would be ready to play today. [Isles]
  • Arthur Staple talks to Anders Lee about his slump/poor luck, to John Tavares about what he took from the All-Star game (OMG Caps fans are so right, they ARE in our kitchen!), and Thomas Hickey on why Tom Wilson is worth decking. [Newsday]
  • We're all (mostly) clamoring for the day he becomes an NHL regular, but Connecticut Post reporting over the last few months offers lots of info on what the Isles and Brent Thompson have Ryan Pulock working on in the AHL. [LHH]
  • Mr. 10-Shutout Ilya Sorokin is the bomb. [KHL]
  • The other night Mike Halmo notched his first AHL hat trick, last night Bracken Kearns did the same as the Sound Tigers overcame an early 2-0 deficit to win again. [CT Post | Soundin' Off | BST]
  • The Wings have recalled Andreas Athanasiou, a brilliant move for the name alone. [WIIM]
  • Like many players who near the end, Niklas Kronwall has been told by others to hold off retirement as long as he can. [WIIM]
Beyond the Kitchen
  • Can defensemen control rebound opportunities? An analytic study says no. [Hockey-Graphs]
  • Legendary Hall of Fame Blues goaltender and one-time Devil Martin Brodeur recalls when he scored in a playoff game because John MacLean didn't screw it up. [NHL]
  • Hey, it's not just Capitals apologists who don't understand concussions. Mike Babcock doesn't either. [SB Nation]
  • Sean Couturier's gonna be out a little bit. [BSH]
  • The "Legend of John Scott" in adorable animated, versed, storybook form. [Puck Daddy]
  • Scott's wife gave birth to twins, by the way. [NHL]
  • An entertaining dig into how U.S. sports fans came to wear jerseys, with some great apparel names from the past. (For me, they used to be very hard to find until the Great Skate catalog somehow landed at our door, and I finally got to see what the Canucks home jersey actually looked like.) [SI]
  • The early word from MLB Advanced Media is that no, they won't go on a digital jihad to remove fan videos and gifs and such from NHL highlights. Which is good, since the initial launch (and revamp of nhl.com) left a lot to be desired. [Puck Daddy]
  • Just a thought, but the Habs probably shouldn't trade P.K. Subban. [HEOTP]
  • But IF THEY DID, the Bruins should totally be trolling that. [SCOC]
  • Meanwhile, the Habs should totally go after this Cup-winning coach. [PPP]
