NHL Power Rankings: What Controversy Can We Assign the Islanders Today Today?

New, comments

There always has to be something. Today, it's netminders.

Who knew this man was the answer to all problems? Magazines, apparently.

Two of the four opinion pollsters who posted articles this week harp on the Islanders goaltending "controversy." You didn't think there was one? Well, then, you would be wrong! Take it away, guys!

CBS 2/16/2016 11 12 The Isles continue battling for position in the Metropolitan Division. Winning four of their last five will sure help. Now the question becomes, what, if anything, might Garth Snow try at the deadline to help add to this team?
ESPN 2/15/2016 13 13 Their three-game win streak was snapped in a loss to the Hurricanes. Is their goaltending good enough for the Isles to win a playoff round?
TSN --- --- --- Page Not Found. Seriously.
Fox 2/15/2016 14 12 One concern the Islanders should have? Goaltending. Jaroslav Halak has allowed 18 goals in his last five games. Thomas Greiss, on the other hand, has allowed 10 in his last five. But can Greiss be trusted to man the pipes for this team?
SI 2/16/2016 14 20 Not to suggest there’s a goalie controversy in Brooklyn or anything, but Thomas Greiss looks like the go-to option for the time being. The backup won his fifth straight start—a career high—on Monday to improve his season mark to 16-6-2 with a 2.16 GAA and .931 save percentage. Last week: 3-1-0
Average 13 14.3 Greiss is twice as neiss.

I suppose you have to have something to talk about, but if advanced stats have taught us anything, it's that choosing such small sample sizes should smell fishy to everyone nowadays.

The Isles' only loss was to the Canes, who are in the bottom half of the table. I suppose losing to them instead of to a higher ranked team is preferable (the wins over the Kings and Wings both weigh more heavily than a win against Carolina would), but had the Isles just won the game they were supposed to win, they'd likely be in front of the Rangers.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, the worst team is rated over 80. Last year, that number was routinely in the 60s. It would appear that, without a McDavid to tank for this year, there were less teams looking to give away their best older players, at least not until the trade deadline (fast approaching!).

As always, I'll answer any questions in the comments whenever able. Cheers!
