NHL Power Rankings: Stick-a-Fork-In-The-Islanders Edition

New, comments

The opinion polls sharpen their knives and dig right into a team who hasn't been rising to their occasion.

Boy, losing games to your peers sure puts power ranking article people in a pissy mood. The Islanders didn't fare well at all against Detroit, and lost on a nearly-last-minute goal to Washington, both on the road, so despite beating teams lower down the food chain, the Isles were lambasted by power prognosticators everywhere this past week.

CBS 2/9/2016 12 11 The Isles have dropped into the wild-card spot as their recent stretch coincided with hot streaks from both the Rangers and Penguins. After taking on the Blue Jackets Tuesday, they enter an extremely challenging stretch in their schedule with multiple games against teams in playoff position.
ESPN 2/8/2016 13 10 Funny weekend for the Isles, who were hammered 5-1 in Detroit but then went home and crushed the Oilers 8-1.
TSN --- --- 11 None this week
Fox 2/8/2016 12 6 Sure, the Islanders have stacked some wins, but they can’t seem to beat the good teams. But an 8-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers is still impressive nonetheless. Plus, Kyle Okposo hat tricks are fun. The winger had his second career three-goal effort in that offensive explosion.
SI 2/9/2016 20 20 Push around a couple of patsies and get knocked flat on their keisters by a pair of contending teams. Not the sort of results that suggest they’re headed for great things, especially with the top end of the Metro heating up. Good to see blueliner Johnny Boychuk back, though. He’ll be a factor.
Average 14.3 11.6 Last stop, Bandwagon Terminal. Everybody off!

Please give a warm welcome to Sports Illustrated, who apparently have been giving the Isles an equal but opposite cold shoulder lately.

Our own rankings kept the Isles relatively steady.

The Isles have been around 5 games over .500 in regulation games all year, so they haven't moved much lately. Yes, a 5-1 drubbing doesn't help, even if it's on the road. And an 8-1 shellacking of the bottom-ranked team doesn't help much. But the Isles have been kinda meh lately, so they're in a meh position.

Meanwhile, Carolina is still 21st despite being not too far away from a playoff spot. Their .500 record in OT certainly helps them in the real-world (but kinda bizzaro-world too when you think about it) NHL standings, but their 4 games under .500 in regulation record can't hide behind the Bettman Bonus points here.

That's all for now. Happy Valentines Day, everyone!
