The New York Islanders made their first non-Ho-Sang cuts of training camp Saturday, placing eight players on waivers, releasing three from professional tryout (PTO) agreements and assigning 10 to the AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
No real surprises in the following, but here they are:
Placed on Waivers: Taylor Beck, Justin Florek, Mike Halmo, Ben Holmstrom, Bracken Kearns, Kevin Poulin, Joe Whitney, James Wright
Released from Professional Tryouts: Tyler Barnes, Matt Carkner, Parker Milner
Loaned to Sound Tigers: Sebastian Collberg, Kevin Czuczman, Matt Finn, Chris Gibson, Jesse Graham, Ross Johnston, Loic Leduc, Tom Nilsson, Alan Quine, Carter Verhaeghe
Those on waivers are expected to also be assigned to Bridgeport, but they have to clear waivers before that can happen.
The prospects and younger players like Collberg and Czuczman (and Michael Grabner trade platter members Finn, Gibson, Nilsson and Verhaeghe) are still waiver exempt, so they can be reassigned directly.
Carkner, in camp on a PTO, had back surgery last season, the final year of his NHL contract with the Isles. He rehabbed that down in Bridgeport at the end of the season, so we'll see if something is worked out for the AHL club. [Edit: Carkner signed a two-year AHL contract with Bridgeport in August -- which I completely missed due to a new dependent in the household. So, safely off to Bridgeport he goes!
One name not on that last list is Kyle Burroughs, who Arthur Staple reports is injured and on non-roster IR.
The Islanders play a preseason game against the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in Halifax at 5 p.m. Eastern.
