With their first pick on Day Two of the 2015 NHl Draft, the New York Islanders selected defenseman Mitch Vande Sompel of the Oshawa Generals.
Vande Sompel, a Memorial Cup-winning teammate of 2014 first round pick Michael Dal Colle, is listed at 5'-10" but brings serious offensive numbers, having scored 12 goals and 51 assists in 58 games for the Generals.
Vande Sompel was ranked as high as 34th among all North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, while Elite Prospects uses the word "dynamic" and projects him possibly as a "Dan Boyle" type.
His Twitter handle is @mitchv_97 and his favorite movie is listed as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" so he's already okay in my book.
Here's a quick scouting report from Corey Pronman that alludes to some good wheels and tools:
Vande Sompel to NYI. He's a bonafide utility man, plays D and F well. Very skilled too.
