Update: It's official. Adjust your lives accordingly.
Bettman: Rule changes approved. 3 on 3 OT for 5 minutes, Coaches' challenge on goalie int and offside goals, faceoff rule.

Reporting from the General Managers meetings in Las Vegas, TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted that 3-on-3 overtime and coaches' challenges for goalie interference are ready to go before the NHL's Board of Governors for approval for next season.
The three-man OT will be the only one teams take part in, pending ratification. The NHLPA wasn't interested in going from 4-on-4 to 3-on-3 as the AHL did last year. The shootout remains, if only to torture and befuddle the haters for another few years.
Here are McKenzie's missives on the new overtime:
Pending B of G approval, NHL will go to 3-on-3 overtime for 5 minutes in regular season games next season.

For those asking, no 4-on-4 OT at all. Right to 3-on-3. 5 minutes sudden death. No goal, it goes to shootout.

NHLPA was adamantly opposed to AHL-tested model (4 mins of 4 on 4 and 3 mins of 3 on 3) so NHL choice was no change at all or 3 on 3 for 5.

And on the coaches' challenge, which I'm sure won't be a total hash that leaves everybody confused and disappointed:
Coaches' challenge on goalie interference/offside goals - with on ice officials reviewing own work at p box monitor - coming, pending B of G

If, after missed offside, puck clears offensive zone and then goal is scored subsequently, missed offside no longer subject to challenge.

Bonus! Um...what?
Speaking of 3on3, NHL may consider - nothing firm yet by any means - re-formatted NHL All-Star Game that could be multi-team 3-on-3 tourney.

So, which three Islanders do we want to see in overtime? Or don't want to see? Too late. Keith already beat you to it.
Strait/Martin/Cizikas is going to be sick 3 on 3.
