After tonight's New York Islanders vs. Carolina Hurricanes game -- which has an early 5 p.m. start -- fans can take in even more hockey, for a good cause.
The Nassau County PBA hockey team will face the Nassau County Volunteer Firefighters hockey team in a charity game to benefit the family of ex-chief Joseph Sanford, Jr., a 17-year veteran of the Inwood Fire Department, who died just before Christmas from injuries suffered in the line of duty while fighting an intense fire in Woodmere.
He is survived by a wife and three children.
Even if you're not going to the sold-out Isles game tonight, you can still show up for this charity game afterward with a $10 donation at the door, with doors (re)opening at 7:30 and faceoff at 7:45.
And even if you can't be there for either, you can still help. For direct support, send checks payable to:
Inwood Fire Department Memorial Fund, c/o Joseph Sanford, Jr.
188 Doughty Blvd.
Inwood, NY 11096
You can read about the tragedy that took Sanford's life -- and permanently changed the lives of his family -- in coverage from the Daily News and Newsday.
