Islanders 0, Canucks 4 (Game #61 Stats Recap) - PK Woes

And that's a loss...
And that's a loss...
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Well the Islanders took their schedule loss to heart and lost in quite a convincing fashion.  The penalty kill had been clicking as of late and it was starting to look like it might to improve a bit.  Nope.  They were destroyed on special teams, particularly the penalty kill, by a Canucks team that's only 19th in the league.  Their possession was still okay, but that clearly wasn't the concern with this game.

Player Data from War-On-Ice.com
All data is five on five and score adjusted.

Michael Grabner played quite well at even strength in his limited minutes while Kael Mouillierat played himself out of a job by the third period.  The second period had a lot of time away from evens due to some lackluster play and penalties.  Grabner didn't exactly have a ton of minutes at even strength either, but he was clearly the best player on his line.  Thomas Hickey and Lubomir Visnovsky also had a great game which didn't amount to any scoring while Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk had a rare bad game.

The biggest problem was down at the bottom.  The team allowed two goals on the P.K. on four attempts.  Nikolay Kulemin, Frans Nielsen, Thomas Hickey and Johnny Boychuk were out for all goals against on the P.K.  The fourth line got a bit lost on a goal against at even strength, but the biggest problem was obviously the penalty kill.

There were a few positives from the game.  Travis Hamonic reversed his penalty trend a bit.  John Tavares had six scoring attempts by himself.  The Islanders actually won the faceoff battle.  Considering this was a schedule loss, the results weren't that bad with the exception of the penalty kill and maybe the goaltending.  Three goals on 23 shots is not going to get it done on most nights.

Attempts For/Attempts Against - Even Strength Corsi Numbers With - Data from Natural Stat Trick

The W.O.W.Y. table looks much improved, but again these numbers aren't score adjusted and the Islanders were fighting from behind most of the game so it's much harder to take anything too substantial from them.  The only individual player in the negatives was Mouillierat while Cal Clutterbuck and Leddy broke even.  Grabner and Tavares posted positive numbers with everybody they played with and there were quite a few people that were positive with all but two or three people, but again it wasn't the even strength game that killed them but the special teams that couldn't score and couldn't stop Vancouver.
