Red Wings 4, Islanders 1 (Game #49 Stats Recap)

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

The Islanders took on the Detroit Red Wings in a game where most people were still sleepy from brunch.  Unfortunately those still sleepy from Brunch included the Islanders who fell to the newest team in their conference that isn't in their division by a score of four to one.  There were plenty of issues with this game possession not withstanding and the referees didn't help keep them out of the box like Dominik suggested in the pre-game thread.  Here's how things worked out.

Apparently some corrections were made during the second and third periods which lead to some people having negative possession stats for the third.  While that's obviously not the case, they did post no shots on goal during a period in which the Islanders were trying to make up ground so that's obviously not a good thing.  The possession numbers look good mostly with all but three players (Mikhail Grabovski, Brock Nelson and Michael Grabner) posting positive possession.  Their possession numbers were better than they normally are and they had more shots on net than their opponent.

First of all some props have to be given to the team for owning the faceoff circle which is something they rarely ever do.  John Tavares and Casey Cizikas particularly killed it like they normally do.  As for the negatives, the team took a total of four penalties against the best power play team in the league.  One of those, Nelson's embellishment penalty, really shouldn't have been called, but the others were pretty clear cut.

Give the Red Wings league best power play four opportunities against the Islanders second to last place (now last place) penalty kill and they're bound to at least put home one of them.  Detroit would put home two of them against a lackluster penalty kill and a poorly playing Chad Johnson.  Grabner had a bad game everywhere - the normally stellar penalty killer was out for both goals against on the penalty kill, but it didn't help that Johnson allowed two goals in four shots with him on the ice.

Travis Hamonic continues to pick up penalties at a massive pace and it's not a good thing at all.  So far this year Hamonic has drawn six penalties and taken 20 for a -14 penalty differential.  Over the course of a 1,640 minute season (20 minutes a game for 82 games), that would put him at -27.4 on the season.  He's on pace for 39.1 penalties.  For comparison's sake, Mr. penalty Steve Staios was -15 during the 2011-2012 season which would put him at -30.1 over the course of a full season so Hamonic is not that far off from him.  Staios had 22 penalties which would put him at 37.1 penalties on an average season, so Hamonic is actually on track to take more penalties than Staios did.  Hamonic needs to start being much more disciplined as right now he's hurting the team (particularly when the penalty killing is abhorrent to begin with).
