Islanders 2 - Bruins 5 [Game #48 Stats Recap]

You spoke, we listened. No more stars and goats, but now with more player data.

Too many happy Bruins in this game.
Too many happy Bruins in this game.
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Islanders took on the Bruins in a Thursday night game that was broadcast for all of Canada to see (well, we've heard it was blocked in Winnipeg, among other places). The Bruins would take a two to nothing lead only to have the Islanders tie it up. Unfortunately that's all the Islanders would get as the Bruins would score three unanswered goals, downing the Islanders 5-2. Jack Capuano sounded less than thrilled with the effort stating that some people didn't pull their weight. The both agrees and disagrees with that assertion.

Player Data from War-On-Ice.com
All data is five on five and score adjusted.

From a pure Corsi standpoint, there was almost relatively clear distinction as to whom excelled and who played poorly. The Islanders actually won the possession battle even with score adjusting.  Ryan Strome - who generally is a good but not great Corsi player - finished with a 21.7% Corsi for which was good for a -38.1% relative.  Anders Lee is generally a Corsi king and is almost always a goal threat(23 percent of people in the game thread expected him to score the first goal tonight), but he was left off of the score sheet and also had poor possession numbers.

The most notable thing about tonight's game was that there were plenty of opportunities.  John Tavares lead the way with nine individual Corsi attempts and seven scoring chances, but only managed to put one puck in the net due to that lost step.  The team as a whole took 45 shots on Boston and Tuukka Rask went crazy.  Everybody on the team had at least one attempted shot and everybody but Nick Leddy, Ryan Strome and Cal Clutterbuck had at least one scoring chance.  It's hard to blame the team when opponents' goalie posts a .95 save percentage.  Ultimately the biggest passenger in today's game may have been Jaroslav Halak who posted a .87 save percentage.

Given the facts that the Islanders have been playing extremely well, the offense clicked but was shut down by a Vezina winning goalie, that they out-possessed and out-shot their opponents, and that they were playing on two days rest while their opponents were playing on nine, this is probably an okay loss. Yes Halak had a bad game, but hopefully he stops playing the puck like he did tonight. Perhaps those shots he scored in the All-Star skills competition went to his head. Regardless, this is a loss to forgive, forget and move on from (though the playoff chances fell from 99.82 to 99.61 according to Sports Club Stats so maybe everyone should panic).
