NHL All-Star Draft 2015: Islanders together; Phil Kessel, Tyler Seguin traded for each other

Hometown captain Nick Foligno picked his Columbus Blue Jackets teammate Ryan Johansen, while Jonathan Toews selected an infamous previous "Mr. Irrelevant" in Phil Kessel as the appointed team captains opened the draft to populate their teams for this weekend's All-Star Game and Skills Competition.

Despite his immense shooting talent which is tailor-made for some All-Star shinny, Kessel was picked last overall in the first-ever All-Star Draft. This year, he was merely traded.

Said the Team Toews captain about selecting Kessel: "We know he's the most coachable player out there," showing Toews is up with the latest tabloid-style media melodrama swirling around Kessel and his Toronto Maple Leafs.

But that wasn't the only bit of theater involving Kessel on this night: Foligno made waves when he announced the first trade in the fantasy draft's history: Kessel for Tyler Seguin, the player who was selected with one of the first-round draft picks the Leafs sent to the Boston Bruins for Kessel.

One of Toews' assistant captains, Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf, taunted the opposition for opening the draft by selecting their NHL teammates. After Team Foligno chose Johansen, they also picked Patrick Kane's teammate Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty's teammate Anze Kopitar.

Getzlaf's Ducks, Doughty's Kings, and Kane's Blackhawks are Western powers constantly muscling each other, and Doughty made some reference to shutting Getzlaf down.

Islanders Together under Ex-Isles Coach

Getzlaf also had an amusingly suspect reference as he and Toews made the New York Islanders captain the team's fifth pick: "We're gonna go with a good two-way forward here," he said. "We've got a lot of offense on our team, so we're gonna go with Jonathan Tavares."

Tavares is joined on Team Toews by his Islanders teammate, goalie Jaroslav Halak. They will be

Halak ended up opposite both of his former creasemates -- Montreal's Carey Price and St. Louis' Brian Elliott were both selected by Team Foligno. The two Islanders will be coached by ex-Islanders coach Peter Laviolette, though both were teenagers when he last coached the Isles over a decade ago.

Alex Ovechkin lobbied hard to be the last pick, but instead ended up frustrated as the third-last pick -- a horrible limbo of waiting all night back stage without getting the reward of a consolation car, which is what the last pick from each team received.

The final rosters will be used for Saturday's Skills Competition -- along with the pair of rookies on each side -- as well as for Sunday's All-Star Game. Aaron Ekblad and Filip Forsberg, both scheduled to participate in the Skills Competition as rookies, were also named as injury replacements to the game roster.

Here are the rosters by order of selection...:
