The Islanders took on the Canadiens last night in what was a schedule loss for the team. Jack Capuano decided to roll with Jaroslav Halak in net and the rest of the lineup remained the same. The fresh Canadiens did in fact handle the Islanders who were coming off of a tough comeback win against Pittsburgh.  Here's how the team did.

The Islanders actually controlled possession through the first two periods but were still behind in the score. They were flat in the third perhaps because of the drain of playing the second game in two nights or perhaps because the Canadiens were just the better team.  Please note that the numbers are a wee bit skewed as War-on-Ice counts goalie pulled as five on five time so some rescripting will be in order.

Three Stars

First Star - Tomas Plekanec

Okay, Plekanec's possession numbers weren't great.  He still scored two goals which would ultimately be the difference in the game.  He also added an assist in for good measure.

Second Star - Andrei Markov

Another player who didn't have a great game at even strength, but still had enough production to make up for that.  Markov had three primary assists on the night, two of which came on the power play.

Third Star - Kyle Okposo

The Islanders loss had nothing to do with Okposo or the first line in general.  Okposo lead the team in possession and added a goal to boot.

Three Goats

First Goat - Jaroslav Halak

Halak didn't play well at all.  Playing goalies on the second night of a back to back is generally a bad idea to begin with and the Canadiens, a big P.D.O. team, made him look terrible in his return to Montreal.  Allowing six goals on 33 shots and two goals on six shots on the power play is not going to get it done.

Second Goat - Travis Hamonic

Hamonic wasn't the worst possession player on the pairing, but a -7 percent relative Corsi is still pretty bad.  He continues to amass penalties picking up his 19th of the season and putting this team on the penalty kill is not a good look.  He's only drawn six on the year, so it's not like these are balancing out.  He was also on the ice for four of the six goals against.

Third Goat - Calvin de Haan

de Haan was the worst possession defensemen of the game for the Islanders and didn't put up any points.  Like Hamonic, he was also out for four of the six goals against.  His possession was worse than Hamonic's, but at least he didn't pick up any penalties.
