Before the July 1 free agency bell even rang, the likely biggest news of the day came in the form of a Jason Spezza trade.
The longtime but reportedly want-away Senator, who had refused a trade to the Nashville Predators earlier in the week, was dealt to the Dallas Stars for Alec Chiasson, Alex Guptill, Nicholas Paul and 2nd round pick in 2015, pending a trade call with the league.
Spezza is getting older (aren't we all?) and has dealt with back injuries, but this is a major center addition for the Stars, who made a major splash last summer when they acquired Tyler Seguin from the Boston Bruins.
