Ryan Strome Returned to Bridgeport, Radek Martinek off IR? (Seriously.)

New, comments

Well that was unexpected.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Islanders are returning Ryan Strome to AHL Bridgeport, while also bringing Radek Martinek off of Injured Reserve, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.

Seriously.

Travis Hamonic is out with an "upper body" injury (which you hope is not a concussion), but the Isles dressed six healthy defensemen in last night's loss in Florida, the first without Hamonic after he left during the game in Dallas.

At the moment, it's unclear whether there is another blueline injury, a burning need to get Martinek back in the lineup, or a case of wanting to allow Strome to play during the Olympic break (see below, with quote from Snow) -- or all three.

Strome hasn't lit up the scoreboard (1 goal, 3 assists), but he's not been overwhelmed either.

But either way, there you have it. Your guess is as good as mine. Or Staple's, as Strome just played his 15th NHL game:

UPDATE: Via Eric Hornick, a link to the remarkably complicated and very NHL-like rules governing AHL loans during the Olympic break.

And Staple has a quote from Snow: "The development of all our young players is important. (Strome) needs to play during the break."

At least Bridgeport gets its leading scorer back ... for the full Olympic break, by the looks of it. For me, it's overthinking things, as Strome can help the Islanders now.
