Winter Classic Detroit Red Wings vs. Toronto Maple Leafs [open thread]

Let it snow, and let weird pond hockey stuff happen.

Here lies Felix Potvin...and why not.

"You don't remember everything in life, but you remember moments," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "This should be one."

Whatever you think of the hype, the commercialization, the boost to Hockey Related Revenues, or the sudden (over?)proliferation of outdoor games, there are two cool irreversible things about the NHL's Winter Classic and related traditions:

  1. It gets players excited like children to play an otherwise insignificant regular season game.
  2. The games have created a trend of outdoor games throughout multiple levels of hockey (especially NCAA and AHL), and getting people giddy for outdoor games is actually a pretty sweet way to grow the game.

I have no idea if there are NCAA football, er, "bowl" games or any other kind of far-more-covered sporting events today. But the Winter Classic is at 1 p.m. EST today, snow is in the forecast, and classic red-and-blue Original Six teams are on the docket.

That's cool enough for an open thread. Full NHL coverage is here. SB Nation has a stream here.

(Also, USA Hockey announces its Olympic roster during the broadcast.) Enjoy the game.
