Islanders' Assistant Coach Brent Thompson was suspended by the NHL on Friday evening for two games. Thompson was assessed a game misconduct at the end of the Islanders 2-1 overtime loss to the Rangers Thursday for abusive comments towards the on-ice officials.
Rule 39.5 covers verbal abuse towards officials and apparently the NHL takes it quite seriously. Two games for yelling seems excessive, but I didn't see the actual encounter between he and the refs.
The Islanders were visibly upset after the Rangers scored the winning goal on the power play in overtime. Kyle Okposo also received a misconduct and Streit waited around to have words with the officials as well.
The penalty was originally reported as going to captain Mark Streit, but was then changed to "Team Staff". Thompson will miss both of the Islanders games this weekend against the Capitals and Penguins.
