Brock Nelson scored his first pro hat trick as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers finished a productive weekend with a 4-1 win over the Norfolk Admirals.
Heading into the weekend the Sound Tigers had lost three straight in regulation. They turned that around by losing via shootout against Providence Thursday, winning in OT in Hartford on Friday, and pressing past Norfolk on the strength of Nelson's three goals.
Nelson's final goal was an empty netter, and they were his first since Dec. 14, when he broke his jaw. The score was still tied in the third period before Nelson took advantage of a stickless goalie in the powerplay. Nino Niederreiter added insurance a few minutes later, his first point in five games.
Nelson now has 14 goals, 14 assists in 35 games. Niederreiter is up to 20 goals, 17 assists in 44 games.
Kevin Poulin played all three games for the Sound Tigers, as Anders Nilsson is again ailing for unknown or undeclared reasons. That's why Kenny Reiter was called up from the ECHL.
The win puts Bridgeport back into seventh place in the conference, amid a tight bubble that runs from 6th to 13th.
