The New York Islanders get right back at it tonight in Ottawa, with both teams playing the second end of a traveling back-to-back. The Senators won via shootout in New Jersey yesterday afternoon. (You know what happened to the Isles.) So since the Isles essentially took yesterday off, they should be the better rested team.
Before getting to tonight's game though, some additional coverage from yesterday's atrocity plus more:
- Brian Strait and that really painful looking crash into the boards? Broken ankle, 6-8 weeks. Which could mean the season for him. (Aside: Coliseum ice, or pure fluke?)
- Also from Newsday, Neil Best on John Tavares' rise, and why he needs help.
- In its recap, Newsday had an awesome quote from Evgeni Nabokov: "It's a matter of, do we want to play as a team, go hard every shift, or do we wait around for Johnny Tavares to score a goal and then say, 'OK, now I'm going to play today, too'?"
- Post: The loss reminds everyone why expectations were so low
- Hornick's Skinny does the historic home loss by numbers.
- IPB: What's happening right now ain't working.
- Howie's feigned disgust with the Philly Phanatic on yesterday's broadcast went sort of viral. (Thought exercise: What percentage of Flyers fans do you think failed to get the joke? And what percentage don't care, they'll take up arms if you rip their local costumed mascot persona?)
- How broadcasts miss digestible stat insights from the online world.
- Proof that NHL officials are always screwing the Islanders. Wait, no not that at all...
- Connor McDavid is the next teen phenom who will be followed way too closely well before he enters the NHL.
Moment of Nabby
There wasn't much fun to be had in Evgeni Nabokov's post-game video (quote above aside). The team played horribly and so did he. But his facial expressions when answering what changed told the story:
More posts from us later, including one from Chris on streaks under Jack Capuano and his predecessors.
