Injuries? Yes. Subsequent defensive struggles? Yes. Goaltending? Not gonna talk...

Evidence of battling.
Evidence of battling.

With the New York Islanders suffering a few mistakes per game that their goalies can't rescue stinking it up, the natural off day topic has become: What's ailing them?

  • Proposed answers in Newsday and WFAN online, and "is it too late" at EOI and "injuries" at HockeyBuzz. Separately, there is the goaltending...but we're not gonna talk about that.
  • In the Newsday link above, expect some sort of update today on Thomas Hickey, who was to be evaluated on Sunday. Presumably we'd get a clear update if it's broken. UPDATE: Hickey is "day to day." Whew.
  • NEW: There's also this for fun -- Staple saying the Isles should be Michael Del Zotto's "change of scenery."
  • With all this pain, why do we stay loyal to the cause? [Eyes on Isles]
  • On the latest line shuffle, and the struggling PK: "There isn't anything you can change on the PK -- it's a matter of inches, or feet, on passes, deflections, things like that," said Cal Clutterbuck. [Newsday]
  • Thomas Vanek is getting lots of requests for tickets for his second outdoor game. [NHL] Frans Nielsen is excited too. (At least, as excited as he gets with the weight of the world's mortals on his mind.)
  • If you missed it, 2012 pick Jesse Graham has been traded within the OHL.
  • Bunch more prospect tidbits from the weekend at Prospect Park here (Friday) and here (Saturday).
  • NEW: Forbes issues its annual hockey franchise value estimates. Isles are ranked 26th, with an estimated value of $195 million, ahead of only Carolina, St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Columbus. [For a non-slideshow version, check the list here.]

  • Don't look, but you know you want to: The Sabres' third jerseys debuted. [SB Nation]
  • We share "if you don't like underlying stats, here's a safe intro" pieces quite a bit here, but this one is honestly a great general primer with a picture of which teams (admit to) use(ing) them. [Province]
  • What is grit? Do the Oilers need it? (And don't you mean TEH GRITZ?) [Copper & Blue] A particular good comment by Adam Wu in the comment section there.
  • The Hurricanes are shopping their struggling forwards Jiri {NSFW] Tlusty and Tuomo Ruutu? [Dreger via SB Nation]
  • On the declining presence of Russians in the NHL. [USA Today - For the Win]. I blame Monsanto and Comrade Collapse Disorder.
  • Justin Bourne snaps a screen cap of the Sabres bench during the end of another loss, concludes they don't care. ("They" being "except Ryan Miller.")
  • In his weekly rant, Larry Brooks is angry about things. [NY Post]
  • Speaking of completely obnoxious formats, YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD MAKE A GOOD WAY TO TALK ABOUT 10 TEAMS THAT SHOULD MAKE A TRADE? IF WE PRESENTED THOSE TEAMS IN A SLIDESHOW FORMAT [B/R].
