[Bits] Matinees, Medical Mysteries and Memorializations

New, comments

We'll know more about Thomas Vanek's and Travis Hamonic's injuries soon. But first there are games, a Hall of Fame ceremony and the end of Bryzgalov's banishment.

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Today is Veterans Day, so if you see or know a veteran, thank him/her for their service. And by "veteran" I mean, "combat veteran or service person." Not as in "veteran defenseman Shane Hnidy" or some other silly misappropriation.

Islanders Stuff:

  • A pair of post-game posts by Arthur Staple in Newsday. Thomas Vanek's "upper body injury" is still undisclosed as of yet, but he will be re-evaluated today on Long Island as will, we assume, Travis Hamonic. And losing games in November is nothing new to the Islanders, who have made it an annual tradition. [Paywall'd!]
  • The numbers and notes from last night's loss in Montreal via Eric Hornick. [Hornick]
  • Other teams have slumps, too (until they play the Islanders - HEY OH!). In her post-game wrap up at Eyes on the Prize, friend of the blog Laura spells relief E-G-G. [HEOTP]
  • Joe Powers of Eyes on Isles looks at the Islanders' goaltending options (preceding last night's game). [EoI]
  • The Sound Tigers have a matinee game today in Albany against the AHL Devils. All the info's here at the team's site. [BST]

Hall of Fame Day

Today is also the 2013 Hockey Hall of Fame induction celebration. Geraldine Heaney, Chris Chelios, Scott Niedermayer, Brendan Shanahan and Fred Shero are your inductees. We've already posted some stories about their careers, but here are a few more:

  • Lou Lamoriello on Devils Shanahan and Niedermayer being honored. I think that Tom Kurvers trade worked out pretty well for Jersey. [Toronto Sun]
  • Really cool read from Hockey Buzz about the life and hockey career of the still fascinating Freddie Shero. [HB]
  • Who is Geraldine Heaney? Only the greatested defensewoman in hockey history. [NHL]

Over There

  • And there's NHL hockey this afternoon, too. Lightning-Bruins at 1 pm from Boston. [ESPN preview]
  • It's official: Ilya Bryzgalov is an Edmonton Oiler on a one-year contract worth $2 million bucks. [NHL]
  • And here's the Toronto Star's Damien Cox with the Understatement of the Week: "Oilers season not going the way they wanted." [The Star]
  • A moonlightin' Brett Cyrgalis was at the Devils' win over Nashville last night and got some very introspective quotes from the one-and-only Jaromir Jagr. I hope that guy plays until he's 70. [NY Post]
  • Claude Noel is upset at Evander Kane. Evander Kane is upset with Claude Noel. Basically, everyone in Winnipeg is upset with someone. [SBN]
  • Not hockey, but of interest to fans of sport: Can Science Predict an Injury-Prone Future Draft Pick? [Deadspin]
  • This is also official: blue-eyed Martin Biron will work select Rangers games this season for MSG Network. [MSG]

Lighten up, Francis. And thank you veterans.
