Kyle Okposo and Andrew MacDonald are your Islanders alternate captains for this season. That's right - I said Alternate

Back off man. I'm an Alternate Captain

Hey, the season started last night. Not sure if you knew that.

Islanders News:

  • Newly-minted ALTERNATE captain Andrew MacDonald gets the official announcement treatment. [Isles]
  • Matt Donovan and Griffin Reinhart talk about staying with the big boys. No pressure. [Isles]

  • The University of Manitoba has named its hockey arena after former Islanders assistant coach Wayne Fleming. [WFP]
  • Pat LaFontaine has taken a role with the NHL according to Bob McKenzie:

    Elsewhere:

    • The first game of the year was 5/6ths old when we saw our first scary injury. Montreal's George Parros hit the ice face first while trying to land a punch on the Leafs' Colton Orr. Parros left Bell Centre on a stretcher and the Habs announced later that he had sustained a concussion. Tough guys. [SB Nation]
    • Phil Kessel will remain a Maple Leaf for the next eight seasons, signing a $64 million contract extension yesterday. Very good goal scorer, very bad interview. The Leafs paid handsomely for one of those things. [TSN]
    • Captain Crunches: The Sabres will split the "C" this year between pending UFA's Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott. Fun fact: the Devils named Zach Parise captain the year before he was a UFA. Whatever happened to... oh. Also, every member of the Edmonton Oilers will be an alternate captain this year. [SB Nation NHL]

    • Finally, this interview with Predators forward Rich Clune by George Scoville of On The Forecheck is absolutely fascinating. Clune is shockingly open about his desire to be the NHL's next best pest, his admiration for Sean Avery, which is the worst penalty box to sit in (Dallas: "The fans have a low IQ in that section") and several other topics. It's really worth your time. I hope the NHLPA's Boring Interview Police don't shut Clune up in the future. [On The Forecheck]

Here's the really cool intro from last night's Hockey Night in Canada opener.
