"The defenseman from Sweden asked about the women of New York."

>>So wrote an IslandersPointBlank reader -- who works at Laguardia -- of Victor Hedman's arrival. Followed by a Q&A with Hedman's agent, in town with him.

According to one league executive, the New York Islanders believe in Hedman and plan on selecting the dynamic player with the No. 1 pick at the June 26 draft in Montreal.

That's at least the second "source says Islanders plan on Hedman" type of reference I've seen recently. But you have to question whether anyone knows the Islanders' thinking -- and whether they even know themselves. Hedman doesn't even visit Long Island until Sunday. Take it all with a grain of salt. (I continue to salivate over both of the top two, honestly. But Ma-aahm, I want both.)

"The Islanders people have barely come out of their conference room for air. They’re meeting with virtually every kid with even the slightest chance of going in the first two rounds. They went from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm yesterday and if they took lunch, I didn’t see them. I’ve never seen a team request to meet with so many prospects."

>>A spy to Chris Botta in his draft combine update. Such diligence is to be expected when you have four picks in the first 37, no? The decision on how to use those -- or to package some -- can make or break the next five years. The gist of Botta's post is quotes from Victor Hedman saying all the right things. Hedman heads to Long Island Sunday and is due in Tampa Bay Tuesday.

"I'll share my observations with Garth Snow," Gordon said. "But at the end of the day, our scouts and Garth have seen them the most, and it's the little things you see that make the complete package. I'm sure Modo isn't going to send tapes of any of Hedman's bad games.

Frankly, as it became apparent the Islanders had a strong shot at the No. 1 pick this season, my feeling was that they needed Tavares more than they needed anything else. But lately, I'm not so sure. Comparing notes with NHL players, broadcasters and personnel experts I know, it's much closer to an even split on the Tavares vs. Hedman question. I haven't yet got a sense of where people stand on Duchene by comparison.

>>Greg Logan, Islanders beat writer for Newsday (aka the paper that covered the Islanders before Tavares)

"When Snow said Monday that he would listen to trade offers as a matter of due diligence, that was before he knew exactly where he was picking. Now that he controls the No. 1 spot ... there's a big difference."

>>Newsday Well, I've never had a problem with doing "due diligence" -- before or after the lottery. But I also don't know -- if we're to believe Tavares and Hedman are 1 and 1A -- why securing the #1 pick should change that stance much.
