NHL Draft Day: Today is the 1st day of the Tavares Era

17

No matter who the Islanders select, their present and future will be defined by the Tavares Era.

The nervous three on Draft Eve

Good stuff from Logan, getting Draft Eve thoughts from the top three... Tavares: Has heard the fan chants, is ready to deliver. Hedman: Ready to win over fans, notes Lidstrom does just fine without cleaning people's clocks. Duchene: Knows who the fans want; hero is The Rocket. Also: a Q&A at Orland Kurtenblog.

Returning from the woods, still voting Tavares

Returning from overseas to find Tavares is still the pick for me.

"The defenseman from Sweden asked about the women of New York."

>>So wrote an IslandersPointBlank reader -- who works at Laguardia -- of Victor Hedman's arrival. Followed by a Q&A with Hedman's agent, in town with him.

LHinks: Picturing the Islanders' first round

As we enter the calendar month of the NHL 2009 Entry Draft, John Tavares still ranks #1, while it's wide open who the Islanders will chase with their second pick in the first round.

According to one league executive, the New York Islanders believe in Hedman and plan on selecting the dynamic player with the No. 1 pick at the June 26 draft in Montreal.

That's at least the second "source says Islanders plan on Hedman" type of reference I've seen recently. But you have to question whether anyone knows the Islanders' thinking -- and whether they even know themselves. Hedman doesn't even visit Long Island until Sunday. Take it all with a grain of salt. (I continue to salivate over both of the top two, honestly. But Ma-aahm, I want both.)

"The Islanders people have barely come out of their conference room for air. They’re meeting with virtually every kid with even the slightest chance of going in the first two rounds. They went from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm yesterday and if they took lunch, I didn’t see them. I’ve never seen a team request to meet with so many prospects."

>>A spy to Chris Botta in his draft combine update. Such diligence is to be expected when you have four picks in the first 37, no? The decision on how to use those -- or to package some -- can make or break the next five years. The gist of Botta's post is quotes from Victor Hedman saying all the right things. Hedman heads to Long Island Sunday and is due in Tampa Bay Tuesday.

"I'll share my observations with Garth Snow," Gordon said. "But at the end of the day, our scouts and Garth have seen them the most, and it's the little things you see that make the complete package. I'm sure Modo isn't going to send tapes of any of Hedman's bad games.

>>Islanders coach Scott Gordon talking about the NHL draft with Greg Logan. DiPietro update also included.

Sampling the Top 3 2009 draft prospects

Taking these anonymous quotes from THN's Draft Preview, which top-3 prospect would you pick for the Islanders?

On Thornton, Tavares and irrational draft fears

When you have two months to stew over the #1 pick, you start to wonder silly things like: "What if John Tavares is a high-scoring playoff choke like Joe Thornton?"
