As of Dec. 27, he had played in eight games this season and his nameplate no longer was hanging in the Coliseum locker room.

Anyone see this from Brett Cyrgalis' 2011 Review of the Islanders in the Post? And...wanna fill in the blank if you haven't read that yet? Not sure why the line is "as of Dec. 27" though, since they played two more home games after that.

Mikko Koskinen’s first ECHL loss comes in Game 1 at Las Vegas; he gave up five goals in a little over half the game as the Wranglers scored four goals in a little over seven minutes in the second. Game 2 is Wednesday at Vegas.

Rough playoff debut for the giant Finn. From Fornabaio's blog.

"I'm done exhaling, I still hold my breath. I'll never forget the day I had to get surgery. It was tough. To think at this age you could have [your] career taken away from you, it's a scary thought."

Most Islanders fans probably saw a version of this Rick DiPietro quote already [subscription], but for other fans just drifting by...well, the time is fast upon us.

When they were using two nets, he had one to himself. When they used one, he got the bulk of the work, so much so that the team let out a kidding-around "heeey!" the first time DiPietro yielded to Scott Munroe… and then again the first time he yielded to Nathan Lawson.

>>Fun practice update from Mike Fornabaio at the Connecticut Post.

"We spent about an hour on the ice and then more time talking and looking at video. We kept that routine for a week. When I first signed with the Islanders, although everyone knows I would have liked a long-term deal somewhere, it seemed like fate to me. After I worked with Sudsie that first day, I felt even more like the Islanders were the team I should be with. I can’t tell you how many things I learned from Sudsie. I’ve been in the NHL over a decade and he showed me things to help my game that no one has before. That guy is amazing."

Look out, NHL. Best-kept secret Sudsie Maharaj has gotten a hold of new Islanders keeper Martin Biron. [great Q&A w/ Chris Botta]

It appears neither Yann Danis nor Joey MacDonald, who split most of the 77 games DiPietro missed last season, will return. The plan now is to keep both Peter Mannino and Nathan Lawson, who will get qualifying offers on two-way deals at Bridgeport, and find a free agent goaltender capable of being a 1A .

>>Greg Logan, in this morning's lineup musings. "Appears" is an ambiguous word, but from the team's only regular beat reporter I'll take that as firm. Sounds like a plan. Sounds like one most fans can get behind. I was guessing Joey was gone and Danis would be considered on a two-way, but if the Isles can pull in a legit, established 1A (*cough* Anderson), this is definitely the way to go.

The [Islanders] absolutely have to come away with a 1A type of goaltender. I'm fairly certain Florida free agent Craig Anderson is at the top of that list.

>>Greg Logan's online chat. Makes me happy, this tidbit does.
