Cycling the draft at Cycle Like Sedins

1

I have jotted more words illusions about John Tavares than I have about any teenager since "Blossom" aired. But a wrap-up of my current draft thinking -- on Isles drafts past and present -- is over at Cycle Like the Sedins, where they will be "cycling" through draft perspectives. There were a lot of draft disasters to choose from, but my pain starts in 1989-91. A big ol' thanks to James for the invite.

HF ranks Islanders system 29th

The price of the Islanders' youth movement? The farm system is still thin. With the graduation of Okposo, Comeau, Fransen and Bailey (via express train) to the big club, HF docks the Isles for lacking an impact prospect* and being thin in goal. *subject to change** June 26. **except that guy will go straight-to-varsity, too

This day in Islanders draft history

+

May 28, 1974 [The finals were over in May back then?!] -- The Islanders select Clark Gillies 4th overall (two behind Wilf Paiement, one of the rare NHLers to wear #99) and Bryan Trottier 22nd overall (second round, one behind Islander-for-a-game Bruce Affleck) in the NHL Entry Draft. Apparently, those two guys were important or something. I suppose they were OK. The Islanders also got "Core of the Four" member Dave Langevin at #112, in round seven -- which wasn't even half-way through the draft. That draft was twenty-five rounds and conducted "in secret via conference call" to keep the new WHA from poaching players.
