Lighthouse Project calm before the storm

I linked these in the game recap, but if you missed them, here are three interesting and complementary takes on the likely next development in the Lighthouse Project saga (after Charles Wang's pre-emptive mini-strike on air last night): Hockey Independent, plus Islanders Point Blank, and Let There be Light(house). Update: Sure enough, Kate Murray plans a press conference Monday a.m., announcing scaled-down zoning plans.

History and Now: The politics of the New York Islanders

An Examiner "Sports and Business" piece that goes from the beginning to the present. Mostly old stuff, but an interesting run-down. No sources cited, so I'm curious to any quibbles with the version of events.

Queens beats the drum again

And right on cue, Queens casts another line in the water.

Murray, GOP can guide Nassau's transformation or its decline

Newsday editorial on Town of Hempstead supervisor Kate Murray: "While some of Murray's concerns are understandable, her zoning powers don't give her the right to micromanage. Besides, if a zoning change is ultimately issued, the town will retain considerable approval over what actually gets built. Is Murray commendably, but mistakenly, trying to ensure nothing goes wrong? Or, is she trying to engineer the failure of the project and trying to make sure she doesn't take the blame?"

1 hour of Lighthouse Project talk on Preds on the Glass

Two nights ago, the indispensable Katrina Doell (Lighthouse Development Group), Nick Giglia (Let There be Light(house)) and Dee (7th Woman) talked lighthouse with the father-son Predators blogger/podcasting duo, Preds on the Glass. After pleasantries and intros in the first five minutes, they get into the nitty gritty (click the link in the heading for audio). Update: Meanwhile, Nick has a nice round-up of next steps. The Oct. 3 "deadline" is rightly quite optimistic, but it doesn't hurt to pressure while you push.

Lighthouse Project 'opposition'

If you're a native or current resident, I want to make sure you see Mirtle's post, with thoughts from an (anonymous) local on opposition to the Lighthouse project. Even if you are an opponent -- this pro-Islanders blog has a pro-Lighthouse stance -- you should read and consider expressing yourself in comments there.

Wang's WFAN interview (with Gordon contract slip)

Charles Wang's interview with WFAN's Mike Francesa. This is the one where he mostly promotes the Lighthouse project, but also inadvertently reveals coach Scott Gordon's contract (he of the "long leash" on the rebuild) goes another two years.

Gordon's contract, and other earth-shaking news

This is more like it. This is more like the type of s-l-o-w news I expect in July: While stumping for the Lighthouse project (OMG! Wang will be at the K.C. game!), Charles Wang inadvertently reveals Scott Gordon's contract runs for two more years, too. Two things you might quite logically inferred, but they'd never been disclosed and it's July so ...

Lighthouse Project hearing Aug. 4

"On Aug. 4, the Hempstead Town Board is expected to hear concerns from local government officials, representatives from involved agencies such as the state departments of Transportation, Health and Environment; the Uniondale school district; and residents near the site." For more details, check the Newsday article, which lists some potential issues; that's par. This process has reminded me not to get too high after good news, nor too low with potential blocks.

Hope, at last, for Lighthouse Project?

Lots of happy talk coming out of today's meeting. And Chris Botta's interpretation of Tom Suozzi's comments today: It's on everyone's shoulders now, and (Botta's words) "The message was clear: everyone needs to stop making this all about [Kate] Murray." We'll see. No one was born yesterday to think a little meeting is all that was needed. But as long as the parties are talking -- that's the most important positive step at this point. Wang's October "deadline" cleared? Heh. Heh. But reason to see a route forward? Yes. So many steps between now and the end point, so many chances for more spin and feigned offense. But talking -- not "talk," mind you, but talking -- is good. Negotiation = progress. Update: Newsday's coverage here.
