Snow Speaks on the Rebuild

Very helpful transcript of tonight's MSG interview with Snow on the rebuild. I swear, it's as if I asked and received.

Kessel Experiment would Fail

I'd been thinking about constructing an argument about why plunging for Phil Kessel -- as discussed here recently -- would be the wrong move for the Isles (assuming he wants $4 million-plus, assuming the compensation needed). Essentially, I'm against that money and term for a kid who has some character red flags that he'd bring around a very young Islanders locker room. As it turns out, I don't need to make that argument, because CBC's Elliotte Friedman already has.

Islanders off-season game plan

An interesting overview of how the Islanders' summer looks, from Scott Cullen at TSN. This will be worth looking back on as the summer goes on. Can't say I take issue with any of it -- other than the suggestion that Martin Gerber should get any interest from Garth Snow.

Isles sign DiBenedetto

Per Botta. Another expected signing. He's the OHL's #3 scorer (behind a certain Tavares), but his age puts an asterisk on that. So it's wide open whether he'll become noteworthy or just an average prospect. But as mused here a couple weeks ago, the Islanders will need some sleepers like DiBenedetto to hit big if this rebuild is to launch them past every other youth-focused NHL team.

2009 NHL Draft update

Not that anyone needs reminders that Tavares and Hedman are 1 and 1A. But you know, there's half a season left, and anything but a 30th place finish means the Islanders could pick below 2nd. (Today: 5 pts. behind 28th Atlanta.) So check out the latest Central Scouting rankings and familiarize yourself with those other teenage names (Duchene, Kane, Cowan, Schenn II, etc.).

Weight to Bailey to...

"Bailey's long wait for his first goal reminds me of some tough dry spells Weight endured with the Rangers the season I covered him. Sometimes, you could recognize the talent and creativity that was there all along, and other times, Weight disappeared, as Bailey has done at times this season." >>Newsday's Greg Logan, in a touching (deadline-free) reflection on these two players' recent milestones.
