Totally Not Related to Anything: Cool Islanders story from 1976 SI

Pre-Bossy Islanders enveloped in drama (shocking). Potvin calls out Orr, Gerry Hart calls out a ref, Arbour calls out first place Islanders. Oh, and the writer: some guy named Peter Gammons. (via Hornick's Skinny from today)

When the Daily News actually mentions the Islanders

Daily News Yankees beatwriter Mark Feinsand reminisces on growing up an Islanders fan, and recently reconnecting with those roots. Cool little bit, with an unlikely beginning: "Being an Islanders fan growing up in Manhattan wasn't easy. All my friends were Rangers fans, and half the team lived in the building across the street from me, as I would often run into Ron Greschner, Ron Duguay and Barry Beck at the local diner."

This day in Islanders draft history

May 28, 1974 [The finals were over in May back then?!] -- The Islanders select Clark Gillies 4th overall (two behind Wilf Paiement, one of the rare NHLers to wear #99) and Bryan Trottier 22nd overall (second round, one behind Islander-for-a-game Bruce Affleck) in the NHL Entry Draft. Apparently, those two guys were important or something. I suppose they were OK. The Islanders also got "Core of the Four" member Dave Langevin at #112, in round seven -- which wasn't even half-way through the draft. That draft was twenty-five rounds and conducted "in secret via conference call" to keep the new WHA from poaching players.
