Bryan Trottier: Ring pig

Thought this story on the Blues owners rejecting an offer was funny. To wit: Chambers said that he was pointed toward the Blues by Trottier, who won six Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins and one as an assistant coach in Colorado. "Owning a hockey team has always been one of my goals in life," Chambers said. St. Louis "was Trottier’s first choice. He’s a ring pig and he wants to get his eighth (Stanley Cup) ring in St. Louis."

This day in Islanders draft history

May 28, 1974 [The finals were over in May back then?!] -- The Islanders select Clark Gillies 4th overall (two behind Wilf Paiement, one of the rare NHLers to wear #99) and Bryan Trottier 22nd overall (second round, one behind Islander-for-a-game Bruce Affleck) in the NHL Entry Draft. Apparently, those two guys were important or something. I suppose they were OK. The Islanders also got "Core of the Four" member Dave Langevin at #112, in round seven -- which wasn't even half-way through the draft. That draft was twenty-five rounds and conducted "in secret via conference call" to keep the new WHA from poaching players.

Who's on your Islanders Mt. Rushmore?

Per Buccigross's bit, for each NHL team. It's either a sign of their greatness -- or how the club's glory years were condensed into one era -- that the Islanders' options are so obvious. He goes with Bossy, Potvin, Trottier, Smith. Like Bucci, I could swap the other retired number in for Smith, but ... it's hard. There is also the Westfall temptation, for "founding fathers" purposes. If you had to spread among eras ... LaFontaine, Turgeon, and ... anyone from this decade?

Eat your heart out, Mike Gartner

"On this day in 1985 Bryan Trottier became the first player in NHL history to get 25 goals in each of his first 10 NHL seasons, when he scored twice as the Islanders won 4-1 over the Penguins, on Long Island." (Okay, so Gartner tallied 30 goals in his first 15 consecutive seasons. But Trottier was a better passer!)
