The Islanders aren’t eliminated yet, but they’ve done nothing to earn our trust, hope or optimism.

The Islanders were off yesterday, and if I were boss I’d tell them to go ahead and take the next few weeks off, too. They need it. We need it. There wasn’t much new said about the team yesterday, and we’re all the better for that.

In the Year of the Wade Dubielewicz Poke-Check, when the Islanders were outside the bubble down the stretch, The Hockey News — which was still a somewhat relevant print publication during that transitional time — famously left the Islanders out of their Eastern Conference playoff preview, which included 10 possible teams for an 8-team bracket. (Surprise, playoff miss Toronto was one of them.)

Excluding the Islanders was understandable if you were doing a preview of that day, but inexcusable if you were a print publication that already regularly dealt with irrelevance thanks to the gap between editing, publishing and arriving in mailboxes, in contrast to the immediacy of what was then the internet’s adolescence. This “hockey bible” regularly arrived at homes with standings that were at least two weeks out of date and omitting trades that had happened in the interim. It was sometimes like reading dispatches from Saturn, except it was Toronto, the official Centre of the Futile Cupless Hockey Universe.

(To give you another sense of the candle power managing things at the time, THN’s answer to the problem of print copies frequently arriving all mangled in your postal mailbox was to send each subscriber two copies of every issue — one hopefully clean copy wrapped inside the mangled other. The emerging internet was a tough, confusing time for every print publication.)

I recall this because the Islanders are by no means eliminated from the playoff chase, so if we were writing an official preview we’d be foolish to leave them out. They may require a miracle and confluence of fortunate events, but it’s still possible. Alas, they are not playing anywhere near like that desperate 2007 team coached by Ted Nolan. And they have tortured us throughout this season, so even if they are mathematically not out of it, we have every right to write them off and dismiss them for what they’ve done.

They are what everyone says they are.

Mike and Dan recap a week of brief hope and crushing defeats as the hard working Islanders teams of just a few years ago finally disappear for good.

Ineffective, embarrassing losses to the Hurricanes, Red Wings and Devils showed that this version of the Islanders has lost whatever spark it had and is only interested in cosplaying as the Islanders we once knew. A surprising victory over the Winnipeg Jets made us think for a moment that maybe they had one last run in them. But a goal-less thud at home 24 hours later wiped those feelings away.

Unlikely wins in Florida against the Panthers and Lightning might be nice but barring another long winning streak, this season is over and these players have some hard questions to answer (that we’ll never see).

We also pay tribute to former Islander Chris Simon, who passes away far to early last week, and give some details on our event at the Offside Tavern this Saturday.

The Islanders followed up Saturday’s big win with a return to ineptitude.

In Sunday’s 4-0 home loss to the New Jersey Devils, the New York Islanders probably did us all a favor (except those who sat through it in person) by convincingly putting to bed any confidence or hope anyone could reasonably have in this team re-righting the ship.

Saturday’s torching of the Jets (who then went on to get shut out in D.C.) was a nice reprieve — the kind of fun break in the misery we used to get when a Scott Gordon or early Jack Capuano team would throw in a feel-good win to break up the losing.

But Sunday returned us to what is surely the more accurate state of things. This team has blown too many chances to prove otherwise.

It has been a weird, depressing and ultimately clarifying month. If the six-game win streak made many of think that the substantive underlying improvements under Patrick Roy were finally starting to pay off, the cascade of causes for this now seven-losses-in-eight slide underline the reality that the roster itself must be fixed.

Of course, as it ages, as it repeatedly shows an inability to show up during back-to-backs (now 0-6-3 on the back half), Lou Lamoriello’s seven-years-for-everyone approach reminds us how difficult it will be to implement a proper reckoning — if, that is, Lou even agrees one is needed.

This team has legit assets and skill. It also has players who are shells of their formerly effective, conference final-contributing selves. I’m fascinated by how this summer will be handled, and right now that period cannot get here soon enough.

Consensus seems to be that Anders Lee will probably hear from the NHL on this knee hit?
The back-to-back games and second period woes continue as the Islanders follow up their big win against the Jets with a dud against the Devils.

Well this was a stinker.

After the dominant 6-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets yesterday, the New York Islanders couldn’t get anything past Kaapo Kahkonen and the New Jersey Devils.

The Isles had their power play opportunities, but couldn’t convert, and they once again fell apart in the second period, letting in three goals in six minutes of game time. The team just doesn’t seem to have the energy for back-to-back games anymore, and the chances of a playoff spot seem to get further and further away.

And the Islanders might be without Anders Lee going forward, depending on if any supplemental discipline will be given out for his kneeing major on Nico Hischier.

All of it is really just so typical of this season, which desperately needs to be over so this team can reevaluate for the future.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

First Period

Luke Hughes rang a shot off the crossbar early, which turned out to be a bit of an omen for how this game was going to go.

Hudson Fasching drew a penalty, sending Santeri Hatakka to the box for hooking. With three seconds left in that power play, Erik Haula took an interference penalty, and so the Islanders had a very brief 5 on 3 followed by another power play. The Devils were able to successfully kill both penalties.

Late in the period, Bo Horvat was called for holding the stick, and then with about 30 seconds of that penalty left, Cal Clutterbuck was called for crosschecking, giving the Devils their own 5 on 3. Adam Pelech had a shorthanded breakaway, but it was saved by Kaapo Kahkonen. After Horvat got out of the box, Casey Cizikas was called for hooking, giving the Devils a lengthy 5 on 3 with five seconds left in the period.

Second Period

Timo Meier scored on the 5 on 3 off a good pass from Jack Hughes to make it 1-0 just 38 seconds into the second. The Islanders killed the rest of the penalties, but a couple of minutes later, Horvat, Palmieri, and Dobson collided with each other and Jack Hughes scored to make it 2-0.

Just a few minutes after that, Alexander Holtz made it 3-0.

Kyle MacLean had a good chance off a rebound that was blocked, and John Marino went to the box for holding the stick, but the Devils killed that.

Then, Anders Lee hit Nico Hischier near the boards and Timo Meier came to Hischier’s defense and instigated a fight. Lee was called for major penalties for kneeing and fighting, and also picked up a game misconduct penalty. Meier was called for the instigator penalty, fighting, and a 10 minute misconduct penalty. All of that worked out to two minutes of 4 on 4 and a three minute Devils power play, which the Islanders killed.

Third Period

Early, Simon Holmstrom put a shot off the crossbar, which was one of the Islanders’ best chances tonight.

Simon Nemec took a tripping penalty, and Palmieri hit the puck in with his hand, resulting in an immediately waved off goal. The Devils ultimately killed the penalty.

Brendan Smith and Kyle Palmieri were both called for roughing penalties, and on the 4 on 4, the Islanders pulled Sorokin to get a 5 on 4 opportunity, but they couldn’t score there. They continued to play 6 on 5 after the penalties expired, but with 4:07 left, Chris Tierney scored in the empty net to make it 4-0 and seal the win.

Up Next

Next, the Islanders will (mercifully) be off until Thursday, when they head down to Florida to take on the Panthers, who currently sit second in the Atlantic Division.

It’s going to take all that and more to make it, but Detroit left the door open.

The New York Islanders got back in the win column for the first time since they were in California by beating up on the Winnipeg Jets, at least for the first and second periods.

Their dim playoff hopes are flickering, and if they want to have any chance here, they need to get two points out of the second half of a back-to-back, which they haven’t done all season. But they hadn’t won a matinee all season until yesterday, so maybe they’re in a slump-busting mood. The New Jersey Devils lost at home to the spoiler Ottawa Senators before traveling to Long Island. Let’s see what happens.

Two goals from Clutterbuck, multiple points from several Isles make for a comfortable afternoon.

The New York Islanders won their first game in seven tries, and perhaps the least likely of this busy stretch, by cruising to a matinee(!) victory over the Western Conference title-contending Winnipeg Jets, who remain at 93 points thanks to their unhappy afternoon on Long Island.

The Islanders took a 3-1 lead in the first period, which for them leaves plenty of room for second-period disaster, but in a refreshing change, they won the middle frame, 3-0, to make the third period a formality, when the Jets got a couple back to make the final score 6-3.

[NHL Gamecenter | Game Summary | Event Summary | Natural Stat Trick]

The Isles outshot the Jets 15-3 in the first period and 36-18 through the first 40 minutes. The third period was another matter, as the Isles appeared to check out and save energy for the rest of their back-to-back, until Patrick Roy called timeout and let them hear a little reminder about taking the task at hand seriously.

But overall, it was a much, much better effort from the very start, as the Isles moved the puck with speed, covered back thoroughly, and did not leave the Jets much space. Several of their goals came from buzzing the net and keeping play moving through jumping on rebounds and cycling.

There were also a couple of goals off faceoffs, including the opener that Cal Clutterbuck slipped in after getting his own rebound, and Anders Lee’s goal to make it 6-1 after a nice touch-pass from Mat Barzal.

Hudson Fasching and Barzal also picked up goals, playing on a line with Anders Lee that has looked pretty good and given Fasching a rare opportunity in an offensive role.

Notes

The Isles stayed out of the box until a late puck-over-the-glass call in the third. They killed that one off, though the Jets got one more goal late on a shot through (or over, really) traffic that Semyon Varlamov could not see.

Varlamov had a pleasantly quiet night, with the Isles building a big lead before Varly was tested too much.

Simon Holmstrom was a scratch in favor of Matt Martin’s return to the lineup. Martin logged 11:30.

It was such an odd game, and the Jets were out of it well before the end of the second, that the fisticuffs and garbage-time shenanigans began then, marked by Kyle MacLean’s first NHL fight.

Cole Perfetti is lucky he isn’t facing a suspension and Alex Romanov is lucky he’s not hurt, as the former’s boarding was scary and dangerous. Only drew a two-minute call as Romanov was able to get up and join the fray, but if there was an injury, that had all the look of a suspension video.

Up Next

No rest, so hopefully they got some in the third, as the Isles host the Devils for a 5:00 EDT start Sunday. After dropping six games in a row, they’re all must-wins at this point, but that one should be a bitter one since the Devils are hanging on to fading hopes, too.

Good night. | Photo by Scott W. Grau/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

I’m at the point where I almost don’t even want the miracle to happen.

About a month and 12 games ago, after the afternoon no-show against the Tampa Bay Lightning in The Biggest Game of the Season Thus Far—a title usurped by basically every game since—I wrote this Bits piece in which I called the season. The fact that the New York Islanders knew the stakes of that game and then looked like they didn’t give a shit until the last 10 minutes of the game showed me that they didn’t belong, and the points deficit seemed insurmountable.

Then the Islanders ripped off six straight wins while the teams in the chase stumbled, and the door swung wide open. They even landed in a playoff spot at one point. And now they have fallen on their faces again. They have now completely undone their six-game winning streak with a six-game losing streak, earning only a single point and now falling five points behind the playoff picture with just 13 games left.

It’s not impossible that they make it given how bad all the teams around them are, but it’s once again far from likely, and it would take yet another miracle. But the problem is they used up their miracle already and failed to take advantage of their opportunity, just as they have done all season long with how many games they led and lost. You almost have to give them credit for how well-scripted they are—very consistent characters created by the writers on this show.

I’m not sure I even want them to make it anymore. I think I’d rather them lose and get the best draft pick and/or lottery odds as possible. If they make the playoffs, they would get swept. Maybe Ilya Sorokin steals them a game, but he can only do so much, and he hasn’t been in game-stealing mode of late. And making it might signal to management and/or ownership that this group doesn’t need changes. But it does, and really badly. It’s time to perform some surgery on this roster. It’s not just the on-ice play; the vibes just seem bad. They exude loser energy. They have no confidence in one another as a group, and it seems like it is irreparable. They need a new mix around Mathew Barzal, Bo Horvat, Brock Nelson, Noah Dobson, and Sorokin.

Given how much of the roster is locked in, they can realistically only remove one or two of the other guys. A high draft pick would infuse much-needed talent. And then this summer and in camp, give the guys in Bridgeport a chance. If Ruslan Iskhakov, Matt Maggio, or William Dufour beat someone out—and frankly, I think all three could play better than some of the detritus currently on the roster—play them over the veterans. Loyalty is a two-way street. I’m sorry if it is age and ability that explains why the players haven’t held up their end of the bargain, but you can’t just let that slide indefinitely in professional sports.

Patrick Roy thought the Islanders deserved to win. They didn’t play as badly as they have at other points during this streak, but it wasn’t good enough. Shannon Hogan and Thomas Hickey were befuddled by Roy’s comments.
They needed to play “connected hockey.” I think they did in the first period, and if Horvat puts that puck into a wide-open net, maybe we’re having a different conversation. But he didn’t, and as soon as they gave up a goal, they started missing their passes again. Very fragile.
