Islanders 2014 NHL Draft: Isles Finish Up Draft By Selecting C's Schempp, Sutter

He's not wearing that hat and jersey today. - Jamie Sabau

The Islanders finished out the 2014 NHL draft by selecting a college center and a draft re-entry with family ties.

If last night was considered a home run by Garth Snow and the New York Islanders, then Day 2 of the 2014 NHL draft has to be considered an infield single.  And if the Islanders want to score with the players selected, there will need to a stolen base, a hit and run, and a couple sacrifices to get the run home.

The Islanders used their sixth round pick to select C Kyle Schempp out of Ferris State University.

Schempp had a decent season two seasons ago in the USHL, putting up 41 points in 64 games.  He followed that up with a decent freshman season at Ferris State, scoring 10 goals and collecting 25 points in 43 games.

He's average size (6', 175 lbs) and has some good puckhandling skills.  Most 6th round picks probably don't have their own highlight reel complete with music meant to pump you up, but Kyle Schempp Hockey does:

The Islanders traded back by swapping their seventh round pick for Tampa Bay's and a seventh round pick in next year's draft (Garth thinks it's going to be THAT deep?!?)  The Isles then finished up their draft by selecting re-entry C Lukas Sutter.

Drafting Sutter means the Islanders get a second round pick after all, sort of.  Sutter was originally drafted in 2012 by the Winnipeg Jets 39th overall.

Sutter played 45 games at Red Deer last year, netting 10 goals and putting up 23 points in 45 games.  Hockey Future's analysis of Sutter:

Another in the long line of Sutters that has passed through the NHL, Sutter is a well-rounded player with a mix of offense and grit in his game.  He has the size to be a power forward, and enough ability to be more than just a fourth-line banger.  Sutter may not have high-end talent, but he has enough skill to land second- or third-line duty.

If the name looks familiar, well it should (if not turn in your Islanders fan card). Lukas is the son of former NHLer Rich Sutter, which means he'll be trying to follow in the footsteps of Uncle Brent and Uncle Duane and don the Orange and Blue.
