Video and more on Collberg: 'Top prospect' or...?

Because Islanders Country is dying to know.

Things Isles Fans Can Look For To Close 2013-14

A nice return at the trade deadline and the playoffs may be crossed off the list, but there are still a few things Islanders fans can hope for before the 2013-14 season ends.

Deadline Aftermath: Winners, losers, Kesler factor

It looks like the Islanders were victims of their own hubris, and a failure to anticipate how Kesler would be a bigger trade chip affecting the market.

Who is Sebastien Collberg?

He's a guy with skill. Worth more than a pick? Yes. Destined to be an NHLer? Way too soon to know.

Vanek to Montreal, per multiple reports

Reports from Newsday's Arthur Staple and from voices at TSN say that New York Islanders winger Thomas Vanek has indeed been traded to the Montreal Canadiens, though the compensation was not yet known (second-round pick and a prospect?) and the formal approval not yet done.

If approved, it would be part of a flurry of late trades as the 3 p.m. EST deadline hit with several big names still on the market -- and their destination not even known.

Vanek was part of a group of wingers for sale, which seemed to both clog and slow the market on Wednesday afternoon, including:

Matt Moulson (to the Wild with Cody McCormick for undisclosed picks and Torrey Mitchell), Mike Cammalleri (not traded), Marian Gaborik (to the Kings for Matt Frattin, a 2nd-round pick and conditional 3rd), Ales Hemsky (dealt to the Senators for 3rd- and 5th-round picks) were all on the market, but only Gaborik was shipped before the dying minutes and Cammalleri was surprisingly not traded at all.

Who wants Vanek? No one knows.

As the trade deadline neared its final hours, with vocal Islanders fans comically jumping off ledges because their deadline for DO SOMETHING was apparently 10 a.m., various media weighed in on what was happening with Thomas Vanek.

In a word, no one really knows, and the lack of movement on two other key wingers -- Matt Moulson and Mike Cammalleri -- plus the on-again, off-again Ryan Kesler sweepstakes, seemed to keep things held up and people guessing.

But also...

And perhaps...

And this was from earlier, but it about sums up the day.

Carry on, carry on.

Report: Sharks hot on Thomas Vanek...or not

Thomas Vanek is a healthy scratch tonight in Winnipeg, so reporters are doggedly pursuing leads on which team is closest to landing the New York Islanders winger in a trade.

Winnipeg reporter Kelly Moore's sources say that team is the San Jose Sharks:

As with the tea leaves from earlier in the day that pointed to the Ducks, we'll see.

Half of the sources and leaks seem to come out of teams that are hoping to throw competitors off the trail or influence pricing, so the final transaction so often comes out of left field. Or in this instance, the left coast.

Speaking of which, here's the counterpoint:

OMG-OMG, stuff happening. Maybe.

Rumor Nooner: Vanek conundrum; LA wants Moulson?

One Isles chip is elite, but a high cap hit in a year where the market is saturated. The other chip is below average, but a lovely cap hit in a year where few D-men are on the market.
