Say everything breaks as according to plan at the trade deadline: Vanek brings back a 1st rounder+, A-mac brings back a 1st rounder+, and we may even have another surprise late rounder back for some depth piece gone. This will present a VERY VERY interesting scenario for the isles to the start offseason with at the nhl draft, likely giving us a look of something simialr to this to play with/use at the draft: 1st rounders: -5th overall pick -20th overall pick -24th overall pick 2nd rounders: -34th overall (next year's was traded) -maybe another in the vanek deal + 1 3rd rounder, 2 4th rounders, 1 5th rounder, etc That's a lot of picks. Also a lot of 1st rounders. Say we go into the offseason with $14mil~ in cap space like we should, this many picks, a huge need for improvement in goal mainly and a lot of youth on the starting roster/projected starting roster: JT/Okposo/Nelson/Strome/DeHaan/Hamonic/Donovan possibly/Reinhart or even Pulock a possiblity. The biggest question I think we should have is do we keep or trade the picks for current help or even trade up? Trade up +'s/negatives: +Could land Ekblad +Immediate Help On the Blueline -Lose draft picks, possibly no 1st or 2nd round picks in the next 2yrs -We already have a ton of young D-men and high end D prospects in the system: DeHaan/Hamonic already look like they will be steady top 4 d-men for years down the line, Donovan has a good shot at that, Reinhart/Pulock were both drafted in the mid to early 1st round in the last couple drafts with both our 1st round picks. Using another 1st rounder for a d-man seems like bad asset management barring trading away Pulock or Reinhart or creating some unimaginable D cupboard of prospects, which was already one of the top in the league. Trade for immediate help: +Immediate nhl help on F or D or hopefully Goalie -Lose draft picks and may likely have no 1st or 2nd round draft picks in this and next year's drafts ? Are we that close enough to a cup to warrant moves like this? Use the Picks: +Cupboard restocked with a few more talented promising forward prospects -Prospects are likely 1yr to 4yrs out from making an nhl impact. Everyone likes a quick fix, but at what cost and what will be the return? JT is signed on for a good number more years and most to all of our core is in their early to mid 20's. The window is far from closing. What signed "1yr rentals" could we actually get with 1st round picks? Nothing more than Middle 6ers or mid pair d-man, which help, but 1yr for a middle 6 rental instead of a RFA prospect for all of their youth? Tough decision. By all means, if we could pull a grade A goalie prospect with 1 or 2 of our 1st rounders(preferably not the 5th overall) go for it. If this was the year of Schneider available, we'd be frontrunners with our 1st round picks, but 1yr too late. But still, Jones/Subban/Andersen/Gibson/etc are out there. Reimer might still be out there for the plucking. Just discuss and debate what you think we should do. I don't have answers, and there may be no real right answer, but oh boy does it make the offseason interesting.
