Across the Long Island Sound and Beyond: Islanders Feb. 22 Prospect Report

Anders Lee at Soldier Field. - Jonathan Daniel

New York Islanders prospects had a tough past couple weeks recently. Bridgeport recently named Matt Watkins the 9th team captain in Sound Tigers history after losing three in a row. In the OHL, Strome's Niagara Ice Dogs had a tough week but Mitchell Theoret had a strong week with his new team, the Barrie Colts. Anders Lee led Notre Dame to a few big wins.

Let's take a look at how the notable Islanders prospects performed this week.

ACROSS THE LONG ISLAND SOUND: THE BRIDGEPORT SOUND TIGERS

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers became the first pro hockey club to support the You Can Play Project and take the pledge to support equality throughout sports. The Sound Tigers showed their support with the You Can Play Pledge video below:

Moving on to games, the Sound Tigers had a tough couple weeks. Poulin started all 4 games and did not recieve much help as BST went 1-2-1.

2/12/13: 4-3 OT win over the Springfield Falcons

  • Ryan Johnansen (former teammate of Nino Niederreiter in Portland) scored just 46 seconds into the game but the Sound Tigers came back and led 3-1 after two periods.
  • The Falcons dominated the third period, scoring twice on 12 shots while the Sound Tigers were held to 2 total 3rd period shots.
  • Kevin Poulin made 32 saves on 35 shots. He did not give up a PP goal on six Falcons powerplays.
  • Goals came from Combs (McIver), SH: Niederreiter (Nelson, Ness), PP Donovan (Kabanov, Landry) and Persson scored the OT winner on a deflection (Donovan shot, Wishart).

2/15/13: 7-3 loss at Providence Bruins

  • The Bruins trounced the Sound Tigers and went 3-7 on the PP.
  • Poulin stopped 12 of 17 shots in just under 2 periods when he was pulled in favor of Kenny Reiter. This was the first time Poulin has been pulled since a 6-1 loss at Binghamton on November 24th, 2012. Kenny Reiter stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced.
  • Goals came from Donovan (Nelson, Halmo), Backman (Nelson, Wishart), SH DeFazio (Campbell).

2/16/13: 5-3 loss vs Providence Bruins

  • Looking to bounce back after the blowout loss the evening before, the Sound Tigers rallied but eventually lost to the Bruins for the second night in a row. The Sound Tigers were down 3-1 and tied it up at the end of the second period but eventually lost.
  • Poulin started for the 2nd consecutive night and stopped 36 of 40 shots (one was a PP goal).
  • Goals came from DeFazio (Combs), Niederreiter (Nelson, Landry) and Backman (Donovan).
  • The Sound Tigers appeared to tie the game at 4 in the 3rd period while they were on a PP. Backman slid the puck through Bruins' netmind Svedberg's legs as he slid to the right. However, Svedberg pushed the net off its moorings prior to the puck crossing the goal line and the goal was waved off.

2/17/13: 3-2 OT loss to Norfolk Admirals

  • Poulin started for the 3rd night in a row and made 39 saves on 42 shots. Norfolk went 2-8 on the powerplay.
  • Goals came from Halmo (unassisted) and Costello (Watkins, Donovan).
  • The Sound Tigers were up 2-1 late in the 3rd period but Norfolk scored with 4 minutes left in regulation on the PP and then scored 1:57 into overtime to win the game.

Sound Tigers with big weeks: Brock Nelson with 4 assists in 4 games (up to 14/18/32 in 39 GP). Matt Donovan with 2 goals and 3 assists in 4 games (up to 7/19/26 in 48 GP).
