Being an islander fan: a tragedy of the common man.
I'm a islander fan whom grew up in northern westchester. In the heart of ranger country and a few select castoffs from the days of the whalers. Yet still way too south to smell saber-nation.
Many have asked, either who are the islanders, or how could be you be a islander fan? You don't even live on the island? Because my dad breed me to be. Much like the way of jets and mets, it was the way of life in my childhood living in college point before moving up county.
The point of this post, is too defend our team. The one we love to hate, yet support when shit hits the fan, through good and a hell of a lot more bad, we are the faithful.
I'm tired of reading the same old "dP makes glove save/breaks hand" or "sneezes, breaks neck" made of glass memes that are on every hockey message board. I will never justify his contract. But i do give him a shit ton of credit for at least trying. He loves this organization. I do believe it's far beyond the fact he's getting a paycheck to do nothing. I dont think hed ever want to just be injured as harshly as he has. I do have compassion for the guy as mih as an albatross he is on the roster. But as far as other contracts in the league, there is alot worse. (see, philly: Bryz and pronger)
We are the bastard some of the rangers...apparently. Bc winning one championship since 1940 makes them superior. Or the maple leafs, whom havnt even made the post season since 2003, are far superior.
I don't get it. If a team wins a title, they have a right to talk shit. But a team who doesn't make the post season or folds in the third round...both are the same. Losers.
Every team has had their mishaps. Like Pittsburgh. How fans forget they almost got exiled out of the state. Shit the bed to get their core. Or the rangers. Whom after yr in and yr out, sold the farm for mediocre veterans and overpaying. Finally seem to get it right. New flash. It's the coach and hank that got them to where they got last yr. Rick Nash
is not going to bring a title back to broadway.
The devils, shit they can win 5 cups in a row and noone will even care if they live or relocate.
By when us, as an islander fans, bring any of this up to fans of other teams, it falls on deaf ears. We are not a Mickey mouse organization. Jokes on the NHL, John Tavares
is already an elite forward, and we have a few more in the pipeline.
Our day will come. And the wait will be worth it.
I apologize for the rant guys.
Let's go islanders.
